In this intrepid act of defiance of an economic boycott of Israel, Mr. Bloomberg took to Twitter prior to this trip to “demonstrate that it is safe to fly in and out” of the country and described Israel’s Ben Gurion airport as the “best protected airport in the world”. He added that, “The flight restrictions are a mistake that hands Hamas an undeserved victory and should be lifted immediately. I strongly urge the FAA to reverse course and permit US airlines to fly to Israel.”
After a preponderance of Mr. Bloomberg’s political track record, it is clear that this is not the first time that he has risen to a crisis situation successfully and summoned up the moral strength to stand on the side of righteousness.
Let us hearken about to the dark days of September 11, 2001, when on that bright, sunny summer morning one of the last images we saw on the morning news before we learned of the heinous attacks was that of Mr. Bloomberg casting a vote for himself as mayor of New York City in the primaries. The vast majority of New Yorkers and all Americans for that matter were terrified about their safety in the wake of the mass murders by Islamic jihadists.
Cries went forth for former Mayor Rudy Guiliani to stay in office another three months to help the city heal its physical and emotional wounds. Continuous paeans and accolades were bestowed upon him for his “beyond exceptional” handling of the grievous situation in its aftermath.
Despite the arduous task ahead of him and the multitude of seemingly impossible challenges that faced him, Michael R. Bloomberg the businessman and corporate executive stepped into the shoes of the Big Apple’s highest elected office with the aplomb that was demanded of the position during this critical juncture in the city’s history.
Moreover, the twelve years ahead would provide concrete evidence that this man’s mettle could be tested and that he passed with flying colors. The litany of Mr. Bloomberg’s highly successful accomplishments on behalf of New Yorkers and their fair city is too long to list in this small space, but anyone who has eyes to see and ears that hear will verily conclude that his stellar leadership skills are simply incomparable. For these reasons and many more, the Jewish Voice exhorts the former mayor to seriously consider a presidential bid in 2016. Now, more than ever, our country is in dire need of a tried and true leader who can take the proverbial wheel as the captain of our national ship and lead us on the trajectory of strength and glory that the United States once represented.
