In a world replete with the pernicious and burgeoning scourge of terrorism at our very door step, it would defy all logic to merely even entertain the notion of dismantling an essential layer of our collective security barrier, but that is precisely what is unfolding in New York City right before our very eyes.

The recent announcement by the New York City Police Department concerning their intention to permanently disband their  Demographics Unit — or Zone Assessment Unit (that was developed with the assistance of the CIA in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks), sent shock waves amongst New York City residents who still maintain a modicum of common sense.

The unit’s function has been the consistent monitoring of suspicious activity in predominantly Muslim neighborhoods of New York as well as Muslim-owned businesses and mosques.

When the Associated Press leaked the documents showing that such a necessary surveillance unit existed, it goes without saying that the strident forces of liberalism and political correctness prevailed as a bevy of lawsuits were filed on behalf of the “victims.”

Issuing their own statement, the NYPD said of the decision to jettison the unit: “Understanding certain local demographics can be a useful factor when assessing information regarding potential threats coming to the attention of the New York City Police Department, it has been determined that much of the same information previously gathered by the Zone Assessment Unit may be obtained through direct outreach by the NYPD to the communities concerned.”

Really now??  Can we actually expect that “direct outreach” by the NYPD to Muslim communities will be a quantifiable deterrent to any future terrorist acts?

Well, let’s examine just who has been chanting the mantra of “Islamophobia” and who has been the driving force behind the lawsuits and the controversy that has been generated around the unit. For starters, the New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) who issued a statement in favor of terminating the unit just happens to hold the dubious distinction of being an unindicted co-conspirator in the terror-finance trial against the Holy Land Foundation and its former officials.

Born of an effort to scuttle hopes for a negotiated Middle East peace, CAIR was listed among organizations tied to the Muslim Brotherhood’s American network. Its founders emerged from a separate Islamic organization that two courts have found played a supporting role for the terrorist group Hamas. And when it comes to U.S. efforts to crack down on terrorists and their financiers, CAIR takes an almost visceral stand in opposition. This has the effect of undermining the legitimate security-related concerns and campaigns of the United States and its allies.

Moreover, the chorus of Islamic detractors of the NYPD unit include Linda Sarsour, director of the Arab American Association of New York who praised the polemical decision. She told the New York Times that the Demographics Unit “completely messed with the psyche of the (Muslim) community.”

She is also the same person who was quoted in the International Herald Tribune in 2012 as defending brutal, barbaric and heinous murders perpetrated against Muslim women by their men folk (better known as Muslim honor killings). She stated:  “How come in the U.S., when a non-Muslim man is killing his wife or daughter, we call it a crime, but when it happens in a Muslim family, it’s an honor killing?’ She does not make the clear distinction in motivations for the murders nor does she say that Muslim women are routinely murdered by male family members for daring to be more Westernized; for wearing lipstick, for choosing the husband of their choice and for getting a secular education.

There is no doubt that the NYPD Zone Assessment Unit has been a most essential information gathering unit and one that has played a significant role in deterring Muslim initiated terrorist attacks. Considering the fact that terrorism is rising at an alarming rate, disbanding this unit under the unceasing pressure of radical Islamic apologists along with their liberal establishment compatriots is an ill conceived and highly dangerous decision. All New Yorkers who truly care about their safety and that of their city should raise their voices in outrage and indignation.
