How many riders do you know who are satisfied with the subway system?

Well, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority says it knows lots of them, with a new survey showing that 76 percent are pleased with subway service.

“Well, I’m satisfied, because it is fast,” said one rider, although he then added, “I just hate that it takes so long, because then, I really can’t get where I need to go.”

Overall, satisfaction among subway riders increased one percentage point from last year, despite a fare increase and service interruptions and slowdowns caused by Hurricane Sandy.

“It’s had problems with storms and stuff, but I think, I mean, I use it a lot,” said one rider. “It’s pretty good.”

The MTA surveyed more than than 1,700 New Yorkers about several things, including crowding on platforms and trains, cleanliness, clarity of subway announcements and station safety.

Of those surveyed, 81 percent said that they’re satisfied with overall safety in the subway system, but that figure drops by 10 percentage points if it’s after 8 p.m.

“At nighttime, I don’t really trust them,” said one rider.

Of those surveyed, 65 percent said that train announcements are clear, while seven out of 10 gave high marks to station cleanliness.

However, more than half of those surveyed said that trains get too crowded at rush hour, and many griped about jammed rush-hour platforms.

While riders will never enjoy being on crowded platforms or on crowded trains, the MTA was quick to point out that there was a time when straphangers had to face far greater problems.

“It’s nice to be able to say that people feel safe and secure on the subway system,” said Adam Lisberg, a spokesperson for the MTA. “Remember, there were many years when crowding on the subways was not the problem. It was, ‘Are you going to be mugged? Do you feel safe?'”

It’s safe to say that the MTA is feeling pleased with the results of its survey.
