Why won’t President Obama agree to negotiate with House Republicans but has agreed to negotiate with Iran?
It’s been a most eventful week for the American people and its president. Just last week, another Iranian miscreant saunters his way into the annual “showcase of international stars”, better known as the UN General Assembly week. For years now, we’ve come to expect the perfunctory bluster and anti-Israel diatribes spewing forth from the mouth of the once redoubtable Iranian President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. As Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said so succinctly of the Ahmadinejad; “he was a wolf in wolf’s clothing.” In other words, he was a straight shooter;  irrespective of reprehensible anti-Israel and anti-Western vituperative.

It seems that after huddling with the various ayatollahs who decide policy in Iran, the decision was made that with a new president, a totally new modality must be effectuated in order to achieve the kind of rapprochement with the US that is needed to get those crippling sanctions lifted. So, President Rouhani turns on the “charm offensive” in some pretty powerful ways and attempts to come across like a guy who has been desperately hankering for peace and wants to reach out with an olive branch to the free world. He tows the hackneyed line that the Iranian nuclear program is solely for energy related purposes, but he is willing to concede to international demands that his nuclear plants be open for inspections.

Seems like Rouhani is a veteran at pulling off this kind of street theater.  He was one of the major players in expediting and overseeing the formidable growth of Iran’s nuclear program, while simultaneously using his wits to pacify those who opposed his plans with the kind of smooth talk that would rival that of the proverbial “snake oil” salesman.

Only one problem, however.  President Obama has bought these spurious proclamations, hook, line and sinker.  Wasn’t it just yesterday that President Obama was once again drawing international “red lines” (the kind he’s become famous for not upholding)  on Iran’s egregious nuclear agenda? Wasn’t it just yesterday that Obama wanted to show the Syrians a lesson they’ll never forget by launching an attack on their chemical weapons storage sites, while all it is precisely Iran that is propping up the brutal Assad regime?

So, now President Obama has decided to explore the path of a purported diplomatic resolution of nuclear weapons with Iran. He even sent out Secretary of State John Kerry to meet with the Iranian Foreign Minister. But that was all just an introduction to the historic phone call he made this past Friday to Rouhani as he was on his way to the airport as he was leaving the US.  As a president who prides himself on his dedication to peace at all costs and his passion for negotiating and hashing things out so that long lasting and successful resolutions can be achieved, he really reached his personal zenith.

Before the hoopla wore off, the next crisis at Obama’s doorstep was the threat of a government shutdown which occurred promptly at the stroke of midnight on October 1. Rather than summoning up his own “golden boy” philosophy of positing himself as a peacemaker, Obama eschewed every chance of seriously engaging in negotiations with the Tea Party faction of the Republican party in the House of Representatives. For it was they that were sounding a clarion call for a defunding of the “train wreck” known as ObamaCare. It was they that asked for a delay in the implementation of the healthcare reform act for another year. It was they that morphed into the avatar of the will of their constituents and after being inspired by the impressive filibuster of Texas Senator Ted Cruz they voted to shut down the government rather than bankrupt it completely by allowing ObamaCare to destroy the level of healthcare in this country.

Here’s the issue. All of the American people suffer in some way when our government has hung a sign on its door that says “Gone Fishing”.  Rather than having furloughs issued to 800,000 federal workers; rather than losing revenue from the nation’s museums and parks, rather than passively watch Congress collect their paychecks while government workers scrounge to pay their bills; wouldn’t it be wise to sit down and negotiate with your political opponents. Wouldn’t it be better for Obama to jettison all the antipathy that has come to define his relationship with the Republicans since he was elected to office in order to lift the burden from the American people.

After all, President Obama has readily agreed to the “diplomatic” path with Iran despite their incessant canards; he has agreed to negotiations leading to the end of a nuclear threat with tremendous gravitas; he has agreed to talk with those who have promised to wipe Israel off the face of the earth, but for some strange, inexplicable reason, President Obama has refused to negotiate with those Republicans in Congress.

More than an odd analogy, to say the least.  If this government shutdown should continue for any substantial  length of time, it would behoove the good citizens of the US to make their voices known to President Obama.  The question of the day is: Why, oh why, Mr. President would you not agree to negotiate with certain members of Congress but why in the world have you given the Iranians the opportunity to “buy time” to achieve nuclear capability through a faux peacemaking stance?
