The North Shore-LIJ centers tapped for the award represent three of the five hospitals on Long Island to receive the “Most Wired” distinction. Only 14 hospitals across New York State were honored this year. This is NSUH’s second consecutive year receiving the award.
“With the ever-changing landscape of the healthcare industry and the availability of new technologies coming out, it’s imperative that we deliver real-time, effective information to our clinicians and management staff,” said John L. Bosco, senior vice president and chief information officer at North Shore-LIJ. “The health system is in a great position to implement new technologies to boost all aspects of communications between clinicians in the years to come.”
In its 15th year, the Most Wired Survey, conducted between Jan. 15 and March 15, asked hospitals and health systems nationwide to answer questions regarding their IT initiatives. Respondents completed 659 surveys, representing 1,713 hospitals, or roughly 30 percent of all U.S. hospitals. This year’s survey paid particular attention to adopting technologies to: improve patient documentation; advance clinical decision support and evidence-based protocols; reduce the likelihood of medication errors; and rapidly restore access to data in the case of a disaster or outage. It also covered some new areas such as big data analytics and patient-generated data.
“This year’s Most Wired organizations exemplify progress through innovation” says Rich Umbdenstock, president and CEO of the American Hospital Association. “The hospital field can learn from these outstanding organizations ways that IT can help to improve efficiency.”
