“The history of Jews in sports is, in important ways, the history of sports,” the Wall Street Journal wrote in their review of Jewish Jocks: An Unorthodox Hall of Fame (Twelve Books, 2012). On Wednesday, June 12, at 7 p.m., the Museum of Jewish Heritage — A Living Memorial to the Holocaust welcomes editor Marc Tracy for a discussion of Jewish Jocks, winner of the National Jewish Book Award in the anthology category. Tracy will be joined by Rich Cohen, author of Sweet and Low and Mark Singer, staff writer at The New Yorker, for a lively conversation that will range from the settlements on the Lower East Side to the big stadiums.

This program is free with suggested donation. Tickets will be available at the box office on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 4 p.m. on the day of the program. For more information, call 646.437.4202.

The Museum’s public programs are made possible through a generous gift from Mrs. Lily Safra. This program is also made is possible through a generous gift from The Blanche and Irving Laurie Foundation.

About the program

Jewish Jocks features work by today’s preeminent writers and explores significant Jewish athletes, coaches, broadcasters, trainers, and team owners. The speakers will discuss such pioneering figures as basketball’s Dolph Schayes, Chicago Bears quarterback Sid Luckman, and handball champion Jimmy Jacobs, and how they and other Jewish athletes changed the landscape of their respective sports.

The book also includes essays by David Remnick, Jonathan Safran Foer, Howard Jacobson, Deborah Lipstadt, among others. While the anthology offers compelling essays and personal reflections on such boldface names as Sandy Koufax and Hank Greenberg, it also delves into lesser known figures such as competitive eater Don Lerman, and Kosher karate master Harvey Sober.
