Legendary American actress, director, singer, producer, composer, philanthropist and activist Barbra Streisand will receive an honorary doctor of philosophy degree from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem next month.

The honorary doctorate will be presented to Ms. Streisand in recognition of her professional achievements, humanitarianism, leadership in human and civil rights, and dedication to Israel and the Jewish people.

Hebrew University President Professor Menahem Ben-Sasson said, “Barbra Streisand’s transcendent talent is matched by her passionate concern for equality and opportunity for people of every gender and background. Equally important, her love of Israel and her Jewish heritage are reflected in so many aspects of her life and career.”

Streisand is the only artist ever to receive an Oscar, Tony, Emmy, Grammy, Directors Guild of America, Golden Globe, National Medal of Arts and Peabody Awards as well as France’s Legion d’Honneur and the American Film Institute’s Lifetime Achievement Award. She is the recipient of two Oscars, five Emmys, 10 Grammys, a Tony and 12 Golden Globes including the Cecil B. DeMille Award. She is also the first female film director to receive the Kennedy Center Honors. The three films she has directed received 14 Oscar nominations.

An artist of unparalleled accomplishments in multiple entertainment fields, Streisand is also a philanthropist, whose Streisand Foundation has given millions of dollars in more than 2,100 grants to over 700 non-profit organizations including her substantial underwriting of The Cedars-Sinai Barbra Streisand Women’s Cardiovascular Research and Education Program, which addresses the leading cause of death among women in the United States, as well as men. Streisand recently raised $22 million for the cardiovascular program at Cedars-Sinai and was honored by the Cedars-Sinai Board of Governors for her support and dedication to the Cedars-Sinai Women’s Heart Center.

The renewed vocalist will receive the honorary PhD in a ceremony on 17 June, after which she will perform at the 90th birthday of President Shimon Peres and give two highly anticipated concerts in Tel Aviv.
