Israeli supermodel Bar Refaeli.
Bar Refaeli opened up her iPhone on Sunday, April 7 and started typing something on her notepad (which normal people use for grocery lists) in honor of Holocaust Memorial Day. She would later post a screenshot of the note to her Instagram account. It read in both Hebrew and English:

“As a grandchild for Holocaust survivors and a proud Jew, I remember today the 6 million Holocaust victims, May they rest in peace.”

Well, the post struck a nerve with some of her Arab fans (apparently there are more than a few Muslims who follow Refaeli on Instagram, indicating that great hair and other assets do indeed transcend religious and cultural barriers). At first the feedback was mostly good (“I understand your heartache, Bar”), at times philosophical (“human stupidity saddens me deeply”), and downright miraculous (What happened back then was beyond cruel, the Jewish people had to suffer and go through a lot of pain.. I truly feel sorry for that, because I am human.. Regardless of the fact that I am Palestinian!)

But alas, things took a turn for the worse when a fan wrote that the Palestinians are going through a Holocaust themselves. An Israeli quickly pounced on the comment, responding that it’s a Hamas induced Holocaust.

Then a Turk intervened, and though it’s unclear what his initial message was, it somehow turned into a discussion comparing the Palestinians to the Kurds, sprinkled with a little mention of chemical weapons, Syria and the PKK.

Oh, there was also a Christian in the mix– – one who has only one picture up on his own Instragram account (of Obama) and yet somehow 81 followers– – and he was stirring the pot by retweeting some of the Israelis that they were raised to hate Arabs and not to hear both sides.

The post had 1151 comments to be exact, but the best one, we leave for last:

“To all Jew haters!!! When u look at Bar you’re quite happy Hitler didn’t finish what he started… Aren’t u?”

Meanwhile, Refaeli seems to have moved on from the controversy, continuing her ambassador work by posing for pictures in Bodrum and tweeting things like “Flowers always make me smile.”
