A group of Republican congressmen in the United States House of Representatives has introduced a resolution calling on Congress to support an Israeli military strike against Iran’s purported nuclear weapons program.

The non-binding resolution that was introduced by Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Arizona) “fully supports Israel’s lawful exercise of self-defense, including actions to halt Iranian aggression such as a strike against Iran’s illegal nuclear program.” The resolution is co-sponsored by an additional twelve Republican Representatives.

Separately, a non-binding Senate resolution has been introduced urging President Obama to logistically support Israel in the event that it feels “compelled” to launch an attack on Iran to sabotage its apparent race toward a nuclear weapon. Iran continues to maintain that its nuclear program is purely intended for peaceful purposes.

In addition to these legislative efforts, Sens. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) and Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) recently introduced the Senate version of a different House of Representatives bill that would officially designate Israel as a “major strategic ally,” a definition not applied to any other country.

Those bills would codify a significant amount of existing legislation on America-Israel missile defense, energy and cyber security coordination, and would initiate the seeking of avenues to permit Israel to join a program that allows foreign nationals to enter the United States without first having to obtain a prearranged visa.
