As 2012 draws to a close, the Simon Wiesenthal Center, a global Jewish human rights organization that confronts anti-Semitism and pursues Nazi war criminals, has compiled a list of the year’s Top Ten Anti-Israel/Anti-Semitic Slurs. According to their web site, the list “exposes the growing menace of Jew hatred from people and movements who wield real power.”

With Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood as the top ranking offender, and the Iranian regime a close second, most of the other empowered anti-Semites are from Europe. The site takes note of the fact that as the memory of the Nazi Holocaust fades, age-old anti-Semitism has returned with a vengeance and new generations of politicians are gaining political power by repackaging classic anti-Semitic stereotypes.

Ranking number 10 and working backwards is Nation of Islam leader, Louis Farrakhan. Having spewed forth anti-Semitic diatribes since the early 1980s, Farrakhan has made previous accusations that Jews controlled the slave trade, the US Government, and continue to seek world domination. In 2012, Farrakhan’s anti-Semitic fervor has exponentially intensified.

In a speech entitled “Guidance in a Time of Trouble”, delivered in San Diego on May 27, 2012, Farrakhan said, “Brothers and sisters, you’ve gotta stop being guided by the controlled media that is owned by

Zionist forces that want to make you pawns in the struggle of Israel and Zionism.” Earlier in the year, on February 26, 2012 in a “Savior’s Day Speech” in Chicago, Farrahkan said, “Did you know the Koran says that Jews are the most violent of people? I didn’t write it, but I’m living to see it.” Just a few months ago, in October of 2012, Farrakhan continued his vile rhetoric at the Mosque Maryam in Chicago when he said, “Jews control the media. They said it themselves…In Washington right next to the Holocaust museum is the Federal Reserve where they print the money. Is that an accident?”

Coming in at number 9 is influential German media personality Jakob Augstein, the owner and editor of the Der Freitag weekly magazine and a contributor to Spiegel Online. Respected Die Welt columnist Henryk M. Broder, who has testified as an expert in the Bundestag about German anti-Semitism, labeled Augstein a “little Streicher” adding: “Jakob Augstein is not a salon anti-Semite, he’s a pure anti-Semite…an offender by conviction who only missed the opportunity to make his career with the Gestapo because he was born after the war. He certainly would have had what it takes.”

Some examples of Augstein’s contributions to Spiegel Online include, ““The fire burns in Libya, Sudan, Yemen, in countries which are among the poorest on earth. But those who set the fires live elsewhere. Furious young people burn the American, and recently, the German flag. They, too, are victims, just like the dead at Benghazi and Sanaa. Whom does this all this violence benefit? Always the insane and unscrupulous. And this time it’s the U.S. Republicans and Israeli government.”

He also said, “With backing from the US, where the president must secure the support of Jewish lobby groups, and in Germany, where coping with history, in the meantime, has a military component, the Netanyahu government keeps the world on a leash with an ever-swelling war chant.”

Jew hater number 8 is Trond Ali Linstad, a native of Norway. Despite his notorious anti-Semitic record, in 2012 Linstad was nominated by King Harald Vof Norway for the Royal Service Medal, which recognizes people for work in the arts, science, industry and public service. Linstad warns readers on his web site to “beware the Jews” and the “influence they have in newspaper, in other media, and in many political organs.” He depicts violence against Israel as a “great success” and supports use of the slogan -”Kharibat Khybarj” a jihadist term for terrorism against Jews. He also alleges “every president in the US must adapt to the Jewish lobby,“ which he says undermines US policy.

The much publicized comments of Marton Gyongyosi, the leader of the far-right and xenophobic Jobbik party of Hungary have earned him the dubious distinction of the number seven position on the infamous list. Gyongyosi has criticized Hungary’s foreign ministry for supporting Israel and raised the specter of dual loyalty by calling for background checks on Hungarian Jewish citizens. A month ago, he told the Hungarian parliament, “I think now is the time to assess how many people there are of Jewish origin here, and especially in the Hungarian parliament who represent a certain national security risk for Hungary.” His vituperative remarks spurred other lawmakers to wear Jewish stars in protest and led to displays of outrage at public demonstrations against Nazism.

Greece’s “Golden Dawn” party takes the 6th spot on the list for their vicious blather aimed at Jews. Jumping on the “Holocaust Denier” bandwagon is Golden Dawn’s founder, Nikolas Michaloliakos, who gave a Nazi salute in the Athens City Council. He claims that is was merely “the salute of the national youth organization of Ioannis Metaxas.” In May of 2012, he told an interviewer that six million Jews did not die in the Nazi Holocaust. He called the figure an exaggeration. “There were no ovens. This is a lie… there were no gas chambers, either.” The list also noted that The Times of London had reported that Golden Dawn member Artemis Matthaiopoulos who was elected as a member of the parliament for the Greek town of Serres, was the front man of the Nazi punk band called “Pogrom”. One of the band’s songs called “Auschwitz” was replete with expletives and included such reprehensible anti-Semitic lyrics as “f*** Wiesenthal”, “f*** Anne Frank”, “f*** the whole tribe of Abraham”, “Juden raus” and “The Star of David makes me vomit.” Matthaiopoulos is the second neo-Nazi rocker to represent Golden Dawn in the parliament.

It would appear that European parties are battling it out for who can be the most repulsive as it pertains to anti-Semitic statements and the notoriously anti-Semitic country of the Ukraine is no exception. Ranking as number 5 on the list is Oleg Tyagnibok, the leader of the Ukraine’s anti-Semitic “Svoboda” (Freedom) Party. In recent elections the radical right party won 41 seats in the Ukrainian Parliament (12% of the popular vote). Tyagnibok has called for purges of the approximately 400,000 Jews and other minorities living in the Ukraine and has demanded that the Ukraine be liberated from what he calls, the “Muscovite Jewish Mafia.” Moreover, Ukrainian MP Igor Miroshnichenko recently labeled noted Ukrainian-born American actress Mila Kunis, a ‘zhydovka’, (dirty Jewess). Zhid is an egregious slur that has been used against Jews since the times of the Czar and was invoked by the Nazis and their collaborators as they rounded up the Jews to murder them at Babi Yar and in the death camps. Mila Kunis’ family, like countless thousands of other Ukrainian Jewish families, left the Ukraine because of pervasive anti-Semitism.

European soccer fans, long known for their bellicosity and hooliganism have now escalated the level of their visceral Jew hatred, which has earned them the 4th spot on the list. The problem of anti-Semitic abuse at soccer matches which until recently has been limited to Eastern Europe, has been revived in Western Europe. The most serious situation has been a resurgence of anti-Semitic chanting toward one particular team, Tottenham Hotspur, which is based in a traditionally Jewish section of London. In a recent match against a rival West Ham United, sections of its fans chanted, “Adolf Hitler’s coming for you” and “You’re getting gassed in the morning” while making hissing noises like the sound of a gas chamber. A reporter for the London Telegraph said, “We are not talking about a few isolated crooners here. A significant proportion of West Ham’s travelling support participated.“ Because Tottenham has the largest Jewish fan base in England, it has long been the target of anti-Semitism—so much so that the fans have adopted the slurs “Yid” and “Yiddo” as a way of deflecting abuse.

Turning attentions towards South America, the number 3 offender on the list is Carlos Latuff, a Brazilian cartoonist. During the November 2012 war instigated by Hamas against the Jewish state, Latuff slandered Israel and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for doing what every world leader would do against the onslaught of rocket attacks targeting innocent civilians. In a hated filled cartoon, Latuff depicted Netanyahu as strangling a Palestinian woman while showing voting tabs with his name on it falling in to a ballot box.

Coming as no surprise is the number 2 placement on this list, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, long known for his inflammatory anti-Semitic rhetoric, his denial of the Holocaust and his public fulminations against Israel is once again extolling his vehement Jew hatred. On July 1, 2012, while speaking to ambassadors of Islamic countries, Ahmadinejad said, “It has now been some 400 years that a horrendous Zionist clan has been ruling the major world affairs. And behind the scenes of the major power circles, in political, media, monetary, and banking organizations in the world, they have been the decision makers, to the extent that a big power with a huge economy and over 300 million population, the presidential election hopefuls must go and kiss the feet of the Zionists to ensure their victory in the elections.” Not to be outdone, Major General Hassan Firouzabadi, the Iranian Armed Forces Chief of Staff said on August 5, 2012, “The Iranian nation is standing for its cause that is the full annihilation of Israel.”

Taking the “ultimate prize” in the number 1 slot on this list is the Muslim Brotherhood of Egypt. Since its inception decades ago, the Brotherhood’s belief system is predicated on Jew hatred as written in their purportedly “holy book”, also known as the Koran. Mohammed Badie, the Muslim Brotherhood’s “moral guide” said, “The Jews have dominated the land, spread corruption on earth, spilled the blood of believers and in their actions profaned holy places. Zionists only understand the language of force and will not relent without duress. This will happen only through Jihad.”
