In the coming days, it has been reported that US Senator Joseph Lieberman (I) of Connecticut will be introducing a resolution in the Senate that would urge the European Union to officially label Hezbollah as a terrorist organization, Lieberman, who is expected to retire at the end of the year, said the draft resolution calls on European countries as well as the EU to designate the Lebanese based organization as a terrorist group. Moreover, the resolution asks that the Obama administration provide information about Hezbollah to its European allies. Hezbollah is believed to have perpetrated the July 18th terrorist attack in Bulgaria where several Israeli tourists were killed and the measure supports the Bulgarian government in its investigation of links to the terrorist group’s direct involvement.

Gaining significant support in the Senate, with about half of its members signing on to it, the resolution takes note of the role Hezbollah played in the 1992 terror attack on the Israeli Embassy in Argentina, the 1994 bombing of a Jewish center in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and its supportive role of Bashir al-Assad’s brutal regime in Syria.  Earlier this year, John Brennan, presidential adviser on terrorism, used unusually blunt language when he told Europeans that their actions against Hezbollah had not been sufficient and that they needed to brand Hezbollah a terrorist group.

“Failure to designate Hezbollah as a terrorist organization makes it harder to defend our countries and protect our citizens,” he said during a speech in Ireland in October. “Without international recognition of and action against Hezbollah’s terrorism, the group will continue to operate with impunity and it will be able to raise funds that enable its terrorist activity.” He stressed, “To prevent this, the international community must assume a more proactive posture against Hezbollah.”
