Hypocrisy Of The European Union

This past weekend, we witnessed the media frenzy that swirled around the visit of Hamas leader-in-exile, Khaled Maashal to the Palestinian coastal enclave of Gaza. As this marked Maashal’s “maiden voyage” so to speak, to his purported homeland after leaving the West Bank as a child and never returning, we were treated to images on our televisions and computer monitors of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians raucously cheering Mashaal on as he called for the complete annihilation of the Jewish state. Are we shocked at such bellicose rhetoric being spewed forth by the leader of the most renowned bloodthirsty and barbaric terrorist organization in history? We would be abysmally foolish to answer in the affirmative to that. What does ruffle our feathers, however, is the abject silence of the international community in the face of such menacing verbiage. Hamas is a most lethal foe with an ominous track record. Now armed with thousands of Iranian made Fajr-5 rockets and other assorted weaponry, its potential for destruction has been profoundly catapulted, despite the damage that Israeli airstrikes did to their weapons facilities and smuggling tunnels in the recent war. One would think that global leaders and organizations ostensibly dedicated to peace would have lashed out at Maashal for saying that “every inch of Palestine will be liberated” by means of ‘heroic resistance” which, of course is a code word for continued suicide bombings against innocent Israeli civilians. We were not that fortunate, as we put our hands to our ears to block out the deafening silence.

Making matters worse, 27 foreign ministers met in Brussels for a European Union conference which focused on their concerns of Israel’s announced plans to build 3000 housing units in the E1 area of Jerusalem. Roundly condemning the Jewish State, the European Union said in a statement that, “If implemented, the E1 plan would seriously undermine the prospects of a negotiated resolution of the conflict by jeopardizing the possibility of a contiguous and viable Palestinian state and of Jerusalem as the future capital of two states. In the light of its core objective of achieving the two-state solution, the EU will closely monitor the situation and its broader implications, and act accordingly. One could easily conclude that the European Union’s sole interest is the future of an independent Palestinian homeland at the expense of Israel’s survival. Other than voicing their sentiment that the inflammatory statements of Mashaal and Hamas were “totally unacceptable”, nothing formidable was issued of the veiled threats that were made by the Hamas chieftain to kidnap Israeli soldiers in order to use them as a bargaining chip in their campaign to have thousands of Palestinian terrorists released from Israeli prisons. No scathing excoriations were uttered by this august body concerning the refusal of the Palestinian Authority leadership to voice their objections to the Hamas agenda. Their silence speaks volumes as it is clearly tantamount to their tacit approval of it. To be an honest broker for peace takes courage. Courage to speak out against pure hate and evil. The tendentious climate that the EU operates in serves as a bulwark for real peace. It is time for people of good faith to buck the European establishment and support those committed to peace, liberty, freedom and democracy.
