The Republican Jewish Coalitions Matt Brooks fully supports Israels actions against Hamas in the current conflict. Not only does Israel have President Obama’s back this time around, but Israel’s military operation in Gaza is also largely justified by the American people, according to a CNN/ORC International poll published Monday.

The poll shows that 57 percent of the American public believes Israel is justified in its military action against Hamas in Gaza, with only one in every four Americans saying the attacks are unjustified.

“Although most Americans think the Israeli actions are justified, there are key segments of the public who don’t necessarily feel that way,” CNN Polling Director Keating Holland said. “Only four in 10 Democrats think the Israeli actions in Gaza are justified, compared to 74% of Republicans and 59% of independents. Support for Israel’s military action is 13 points higher among men than among women, and 15 points higher among older Americans than among younger Americans.”

The survey also indicates 59 percent of Americans sympathize with the Israelis, while 13 percent say they sympathize more with the Palestinians, and 11% say they don’t sympathize with either side.

“That’s nothing new,” said Holland. “The number of Americans who sympathize more with the Palestinians has never been higher than 18% since the question was first asked in 1988. Sympathies for Israel have sometimes dipped below 50%, but have been over that mark for the past eight years.”

The CNN/ORC survey also found a sharp partisan gap between the Democrats’ and the Republicans’ support for Israel. Seventy-four percent of Republicans said the operation is justified, along with 59 percent of independents. However, only 41 percent of Democrats said military action was justified.

Republican Jewish Coalition Executive Director Matt Brooks commented in a press release saying: “At this time, Hamas is launching hundreds of rockets a day against civilian targets in Israel and the IDF is using pinpoint strikes to take out Hamas’ weapons capabilities with the least possible harm to the Palestinian civilians among whom Hamas is embedded. The RJC joins with the Jewish community and all friends of Israel in expressing our support for Israel’s actions and our fervent hope that Israel’s operations against Hamas will bring lasting security to the people of Israel.

“We hope all Americans will rally behind Israel. Regardless of one’s politics, now is the time for people in both parties to unite in support of America’s only democratic ally in the region – Israel,” Brooks said.
