Provocative comedian Sarah Silverman – never one to avoid any type of controversy – spoke with “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno on October 26 about her recent spat with an Orthodox rabbi. A few weeks back, Rabbi Yaakov Rosenblatt penned an open letter to the Jewish Press lashing out at Silverman for her often explicit brand of comedy, and urging her to get married and raise children as a means of changing the focus of her life. Silverman’s father grabbed the spotlight by defending his daughter and excoriating Rabbi Rosenblatt in published comments to the weekly newspaper.
Discussing the brouhaha with Leno, Silverman said that she is not upset by the spirited back-and-forth, and claimed her father has come to terms with it as well. “He’s so horrified to now be famous,” Silverman said. “Just kidding: He loves it.” She added: “He acted mad, but it was definitely an opportunity for him to brag about all of his girls.” The sharp-tongued comedian was referring to one sister who is an ordained and practicing “rabbi,” and the sister’s daughter, who is currently serving in the Israel Defense Forces.
