Although he did not mention the country outright, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon condemned Iran – during his appearance there at the Non-Aligned Movement summit – for issuing anti-Israel and anti-Jewish statements.

“I strongly reject threats by any member state to destroy another, or outrageous attempts to deny historical facts such as the Holocaust,” Ban said in his Tehran speech to the gathering. “Claiming that Israel does not have the right to exist or describing it in racist terms is not only wrong, but undermines the very principle we all have pledged to uphold.”

Ban was referring to comments made on more than one occasion by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who has repeatedly claimed the Holocaust did not actually happen, and earlier this month described Israel as a “cancerous tumor”. In 2005, the radical leader made his infamous statement that Israel should be “wiped off the map.” According to scholars of the Persian language, Ahmadinejad’s could more precisely be translated as, “Israel must vanish from the page of time.”

The United Nations leader’s presence at the NAM summit was counter to urgings by the United States and Israel that he should boycott the event.

Ban’s remarks followed a vicious verbal onslaught against the Jewish state by Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei during a speech inaugurating the conference. “Even now after 65 years the same kind of crimes marks the treatment of Palestinians remaining in the occupied territories by the ferocious Zionist wolves,” Khamenei said according to the Fars news agency, adding that Israel perpetrates “new crimes one after the other and creates new crises for the region.”

The Supreme Leader further stated that the “Zionist regime, which has carried out assassinations and caused conflicts and crimes for decades by waging disastrous wars, killing people, occupying Arab territories and organizing state terror in the region and in the world, labels the Palestinian people as ‘terrorists,’ the people who have stood up to fight for their rights.”
