Ivy-League IT Leader Franklin Steen Joins Touro College & University System

Dr. Franklin Steen has been appointed Vice President of Technology for the Touro College and University System, President and CEO Dr. Alan Kadish announced last week.

“The Touro College and University System is positioned to embrace the future with the latest innovations in information technology and to maximize its impact on learning,” said Dr. Kadish. “We looked for the best and brightest individual to fill this critical role. I am confident Dr. Steen has the will, energy and talent to harness the potential of Touro’s vast network and to forge the academic and administrative units to make them the best they can be throughout the Touro system.”

Dr. Steen has enjoyed a distinguished career as the Chief Technology Officer at leading universities around the country. Most recently Steen was CIO and Assistant Vice President for Instructional Computing and Informational Technology at Hunter College at the City University of New York. In that capacity, he worked closely with faculty and staff to define IT priorities, created several new initiatives to improve faculty use of instructional technology, consolidated disparate help desk functions and led Hunter’s CUNY-Peoplesoft Enterprise Resource Planning implementation.

Previously, Steen served as Director of Computer Services, a CIO-equivalent position, for the Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences for over 11 years. Before Harvard, Steen was Director of Instructional Computing Services at Yale University and Director of Computer Education and Technology at Choate Rosemary Hall. Prior to his career in IT management, Steen was an instructor for 15 years, with experience in a wide variety of subject areas including mathematics, physics and computer science subject areas. Steen holds a B.A. and M.A. in mathematics from the University of California, Los Angeles and a Ph.D. from Columbia University.

“I am very excited about this outstanding professional opportunity and to be affiliated with an institution such as Touro whose mission is very meaningful to me,” said Dr. Steen. “I am interested in all aspects of the use of technology in education. One area in which I have particular expertise is the faculty experience in the classroom. In order to provide faculty with the latest tools and to advance higher education with IT, I have taught regular calculus classes and enhanced them with technology.”

According to Senior Vice President Alan Schoor, “Touro has extensive staff resources supporting technology across the institution and is continuously evaluating new technologies. This new position will allow for synergy across the institution and the implementation of best practices that will benefit everyone.”

Steen will officially begin his tenure at Touro in September.
