Soros’ complicated love life went into court last year when his girlfriend of five years, Brazilian actress Adriana Ferreyr sued Soros for possession of a $1.9 million apartment in New York City which she claims was promised to her. Soros was married twice before, for 23 years between 1960 and 1983 to Annaliese Witschak, and for 22 years between 1983 and 2005 to Susan Weber Soros, who was twenty five years his junior. He has five children between the two marriages.
A Hungarian-American, Soros moved to the United States in 1956. Although he started a namesake hedge fund management firm in 1970, Soros notably made a vast part of his fortune by placing a sizeable bet on the devaluation of the British pound in the early 1990s, earning him the nickname “the man who broke the Bank of England.” He’s also well known for both his philanthropy and his support of left-wing organizations like J Street. He is infamous among many Jews for his anti-Israel activism.
Forbes currently lists Soros as the seventh-richest person in the United States with a net worth of $22 billion.
Reuters reports that the engagement ring consisted of a Graff diamond in a platinum setting on a rose gold band. In terms of a prenuptial agreement, Soros’ lawyer William D. Zabel said: “It is well known that Mr. Soros will leave the bulk of his estate to charity but he intends to provide generously for his wife.”
