Brooklyn Man Murders Mother

Tragedy struck Midwood this past Saturday night when an emotionally disturbed man murdered his 64-year-old mother by stabbing her 41 times. Richard Cohen, 31, who had fought with Anne Cohen for years over money issues, was arrested without any resistance when police arrived at his Ocean Avenue apartment. He was subsequently arraigned on a second-degree murder charge and held without bail, according to an official.

“There was a record of domestic incidents, domestic violence in that household between the son and the mother,” Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said on Sunday. Among other incidents, Richard Cohen was once placed in a mental hospital for threatening to stab his mother with a knife. Although Anne Cohen filed a harassment complaint against her son seven years ago, the relationship had apparently improved, and she was visiting her son when a new argument about financial matters broke out between the two.

“She was a little woman. She couldn’t fight that big kid,” a friend, Betsy Fares, told the Daily News. Neighbors disclosed that Anne Cohen had accumulated significant wealth over the years, and her son grew jealous because he had trouble paying for his basic needs. “She would hide her jewelry if she bought herself something,” Fares said. “He was on a lot of medication. He was crazy.”

Looking dazed, Richard Cohen would not respond to questions from reporters as detectives escorted him out of the 70th Precinct station house on Sunday afternoon.
