Late Wednesday morning, a number of manholes near 14th Avenue and 50th Street in Boro Park exploded, causing the manholes – and possibly several transformers – to burst into flames. While emergency personnel were called to the scene, firefighters checked adjacent buildings for any infiltration of carbon monoxide, prompting at least one school in the immediate area to be evacuated. Con Edison reported that there were “minimal outages” of electricity in the vicinity of the explosions.
Just the day before, a similar problem was reported at 14th Avenue and 39th Street, with the Fire Department responding there as well.
