Delmon Young, a baseball player with the Detroit Tigers, was arrested last Friday for going on an anti-Semitic rampage and assaulting a man in front of a Midtown Manhattan hotel during overnight hours.

The incident apparently ensued around 2:30 AM when a beggar wearing a yarmulke came up to a group of people outside the hotel on Sixth Avenue and asked them for change. At that point, Young, who was standing nearby, began shouting “[Expletive] Jews! [Expletive] Jews!” In response, another man and a group of his friends confronted the ballplayer and got into a physical altercation with him.

Young reportedly scratched a 32-year-old during the brawl on East 54th Street, pushing him down to the ground in the lobby of the Hilton Hotel. Both groups eventually went back to their rooms, according to sources, at which time one of the men Young had injured discovered that he had several scratches on his arm and called 911. The man was subsequently treated at the scene by paramedics.

Young, who has earned a reputation for his strong arm in the outfield, was “highly intoxicated,” sources revealed, and had to be taken to Roosevelt Hospital to sober up before he was arrested and taken to the Midtown North Precinct. Looking solemn, the Tiger was escorted from the police station at approximately 11:15 AM. The outfielder kept his head down and remained silent while being led to a waiting police car.

The Tigers, who were in New York to play against the Yankees, offered no comment on the incident. Tigers spokesman Rick Thompson said “We’ll get back to you” when asked about Young’s status on the team.

Young – who has been involved with previous disturbances arising from his hot-tempered personality – was charged with aggravated harassment. Authorities investigating the incident are also considering the possibility of charging him with a hate crime.

Young entered professional baseball with the Rays in 2006 and spent two years with the team before being traded to the Twins in advance of the 2008 season. Last year, he was traded to the Tigers.

Before joining the major leagues, Young became embroiled in controversy while playing for the Triple-A Durham Bulls. During a game against the Pawtucket Red Sox, he threw a bat at an umpire.

Young has played rather poorly this season, hitting a mere .242, with 1 homer and 5 RBIs.
