Precheck, a new TSA program, will expedite screening for select airli ne passengers.Over the past few years, airports have increasingly been associated with long waiting lines, annoying searches and strips, and seemingly endless periods of standing. For some, the agitation has arrived on an annual basis. For others, who travel frequently for business or personal reasons, the sting of airport waits has been felt more acutely.

To cater to such travelers, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has instituted a new initiative. By paying one hundred dollars, passing a background check, and performing adequately in an interview with a Custom’s officer, frequent fliers can now partake in Precheck, a program that will allow them to bypass body searches and clothes-removals, slip through a metal detector, and proceed to the appropriate gate at airport terminals.
Already installed at nine airports and two airlines, Precheck has widely been acclaimed for both its security and comfort components.

In terms of security, the new program has allowed security personnel to more effectively utilize their resources in the tackling of relevant security issues. Instead of dealing with large numbers of people in waiting lines, the TSA is now focusing its attention on more risky, lesser-known fliers. Though frequent fliers are still screened before flights, airport authorities are now awarded with more time and resources to evaluate those of greater security significance.

“Intelligence plays a critical role in keeping transportation safe, and the continued expansion of TSA Precheck supports the growth of a more intelligence-driven, risk-based security system,” said TSA Administrator John S. Pistole, according to the Administration’s website. “We are encouraged by the positive feedback we are receiving about TSA Precheck, the opportunities to expand it and enhancements to aviation security across the country.”

Besides for ramping up security, the TSA has also been lauded for enhancing services for the best of customers. Some frequent fliers have reveled in the opportunity to pass through exclusive airport lines without having to remove their shoes, jackets, or belts, and to enter planes without been reprimanded for the liquid and computer contents of their carry-ons. Comfort has generally been regarded as the best feature of the new initiative, and the rise in the number of Precheck applications as of late signifies its appeal among the flying class.

Those eligible for Precheck include frequent fliers who often travel with American and Delta Airlines, currently the only two airlines involved in the initiative, and travelers previously enrolled in the United States Custom and Border Protection’s “Global Entry” program. Members of the “Global Entry” class have the distinctive opportunity of bypassing long Custom lines when they arrive in a country by simply making use of a kiosk. Such individuals, along with Nexus and Sentri fliers, “trusted travelers” who oft cross the Canadian and Mexican borders, can transfer to Precheck because of their security status. The most drastic increase in applications, in fact, has come for the “Global Entry” program, as fliers are becoming increasingly aware of the boons of Precheck.

While currently only available for domestic flights, Precheck is expected to be implemented at thirty five airports and six airlines by the end of the year.
