LLCThe Jewish Community Relations Council of New York held a widely attended Gala Dinner on March 22 at the Pierre Hotel in Manhattan. Journalists, politicians, and prominent community members assembled to celebrate the success of the JCRC, which has served New York Jewish communities in a wide range of areas since 1976, according to the organization’s website. The evening was highlighted by a keynote address given by Ido Aharoni, Consul General of Israel in New York, and the reception of three JCRC awards by Stephen B. Siegel, Alexandra Lebenthal, and Edward and Art Coppola, accomplished businesspeople who were recognized for their communal involvement and contributions.

Stephen Siegel received the Corporate Leader Award “in recognition of [his] deep and invaluable dedication to family, community, Israel and Jewish involvement.” Siegel is the Chairman of Global Brokerage at CBRE, one of the world’s largest commercial real estate companies. He was named by Crain’s as one of the 100 Most Influential Business Leaders in New York City, and is widely viewed as one of the most accomplished businesspeople in the real estate industry. He has conducted negotiations in Europe, Japan, Hong Kong, China, Thailand and Latin America, according to a summary given on the CBRE website, and has arranged settlements for a number of prominent clients during his years in business. Siegel has been honored for his commercial and communal efforts on several occasions; he received the American Jewish Committee’s 2007 Real Estate Division National Human Relations Award and the Israel Bonds’ Real Estate and Construction Division’s 2007 Israel Peace Medal (for his leadership in building Israel’s economy through the Israel Bonds program), among other accolades.

Alexandra Lebenthal received the Continuing Legacy Award “In recognition of [her] deep and invaluable dedication to family, community and Jewish traditions.” The daughter of James Lebenthal, who presented his daughter with the award, Lebenthal now serves as the President and CEO of Lebenthal & Co., and Alexandra and James, LLC. Her firm offers brokerage services and specializes in municipal bonds education. After graduating from Princeton in 1986, Lebenthal quickly climbed to heights in the financial arena and became a CEO at the age of thirty-one. Today, she serves in a number of business capacities and was recognized by Crain’s as one of the top 50 Women in Wealth Management in 2009. Lebenthal has written a novel, is a contributing editor to www.NewYorkSocialDiary.com, and frequently makes public appearances in the media. Beyond the office, she is also a contributor to The School of American Ballet, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Botanical Gardens. Under the umbrella of the United Jewish Appeal, Lebenthal is also a founding member of “The Women’s Executive Circle,” a group of accomplished Jewish women who support women in the workplace.
Arthur and Edward Coppola were jointly awarded the Community Builders Award “in recognition of [their] deep and invaluable [commitments] to the honored value of ‘giving back’ to all communities and faiths.” Both men lead Macerich, a real estate company with property holdings nationally. As the CEO and President, respectively, Art and Ed have helped to transform a formerly private real estate enterprise into a national commercial powerhouse. By securing attractive properties and crafting a retail environment of appeal to both retailers and patrons, the brothers have successfully amassed more than 70 properties, including more than fifty shopping centers. The Freehold Raceway Mall in Freehold Township, New Jersey and the Queens Center are among Macerich’s malls. Art is a member of the International Council of Shopping Centers and The National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts (NAREIT), and both brothers serve on the Real Estate Roundtable in Washington, D.C.

Edward Coppola received the award on behalf of himself and Arthur from Michael S. Miller, Executive Vice President of the JCRC, and Jacques Brand, co-head of Investment-banking Coverage and Advisory at Deutsche Bank. Matthew Goldstein, chancellor of CUNY, presented the Corporate Leader Award to Stephen Siegel.

More than six hundred guests poured into the Pierre on March 22, with large numbers arriving in support of the honorees or the presenters. In terms of fundraising, the JCRC was able to successfully procure more than $1.5 million in donations.

Over the last thirty five years, the Council has “served as the central coordinating and resource body for the Jewish community in the metropolitan New York area in the community relations field,” according to its website.
