It was just four years ago when Giants nation witnessed an impossible upset when they beat the undefeated Patriots in Super Bowl XLII. This year, Big Blue was again the recipient of a rematch with New England in Super Bowl in Indianapolis.

It’s been an up-and-down season for the G-men this season to say the least. They started the season off with an embarrassing loss in Washington, won three in a row, then came home and were shocked by the Seahawks. The loss was followed up by an impressive three-game winning streak that was capped off by a strong late game two-minute rally on the road to beat the Patriots. After that, the Giants lost four games in a row, one in which they almost beat the undefeated Packers in a thriller in Week 13. But their fortunes turned around after the losing skid and were able to clinch a playoff spot on the last night of the season with a win against their divsion rivals Cowboys. The men in blue then took over in the playoffs by crushing the Falcons at home, defeating the world champion Packers on the road, and the beating 49ers in OT, to punch their ticket to the big game. The Patriots on the other hand haven’t lost a game since they were beaten in that big game on their home field by the Giants in Week Nine. New England has since won 10 games in a row, and snuck in to the Super Bowl when Ravens kicker Bill Cundiff missed a game-tying field goal that would have sent the game into overtime in the AFC championship game. This will be the fifth Super Bowl appearance for both head coach Bill Belichick and all-star QB Tom Brady.

The time had finally come for Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis (which, incidentally happens to be my wife’s home town). After all the media interviews, all the hoopla, and trash talking was over, it was finally time to play some championship caliber football.  The Giants got on the board first when they forced a Tom Brady safety with seven minutes remaining in the first quarter, and then went up 9-0 three minutes later when Eli Manning found Victor Cruz in the end zone.  In the 2nd quarter, the patriots kicked a field goal and then Brady threw a touchdown to Danny Woodhead to take a 10-9 lead into the half. The Patriots started the second half with a touchdown by Aaron Hernandez, upping the score to 17-9. Lawrence Tynes kicked a field goal moments later to make it a five point game. The Giants made a big stop on the Pats’ ensuing possession and got three more points out of it to, shaving New England’s lead down to two points.

Early in the 4th, Chase Blackburn intercepted Tom Brady’s pass at the Giants’ 20 yard line to prevent them from increasing their lead. Big blue made several defensive stops to set up one final drive with under 4 minutes remaining to win the game. Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning orchestrated a nine play, 88 yard drive which included a beautiful catch by Mario Manningham and was capped off by an Ahmad Bradshaw six-yard touchdown to take a 21-17 lead with 57 seconds remaining. The G-men prevented Brady from finding any of his targets during the desperate drive to win the game. After one last throw into end zone fell incomplete, the NY Giants were Super Bowl champions once again. They have again done the unthinkable by beating a heavily favored team to win the title. As a long time and huge Giants fan, this was one of the greatest moments in my sports life. At the parade, seeing the Giants float down Broadway holding the Lombardi trophy made the season even sweeter!
