Arkia Airlines, owned and run by the Nakash brothers, Ralph, Joe, and Avi, of Jordache jeans fame, plans to start 25-minute regional flights to the Dead Sea with 72-seat regional ATR planes operating from Ben Gurion and Sde Dov airports to the Masada Airfield once the Israeli Civil Aviation Authority authorizes that the regional planes are safe to operate in the Dead Sea area, according to Yedioth Ahronoth. This quick 25-minute flight would compare very favorably to the 2 ½-hour drive. Imagine waking up to a sunrise looking out over the Negev desert and taking one of those famous sunrise hikes by foot up to Masada or by tram! Then you could enjoy the spectacular views and the incredible history at Masada, including an ancient synagogue and an array of ruins! Then you could have a nice breakfast at your local hotel, float on the Dead Sea, get a mud bath, or ride a camel perhaps.
“Arkia CEO Gadi Tepper noted that no other airline operates regular flights to the Dead Sea.” Tepper said that “it all started when Tourism Minister Stas Misezhnikov, who is promoting the Dead Sea’s elections as one of the new world wonders, issued the challenge.” The plan is to use the flights to help make the Dead Sea a big local and international tourist attraction for conventions, trips, and various travel packages, in fact, to make the Dead Sea Israel’s most sought-after travel destination for going to a Dead Sea spa, hike, hotel, or maybe a summertime performance by the Israeli Opera.
