Wynn Resorts has decided to temporarily close Wynn Las Vegas and Encore as part of its continuing effort to reduce the spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus).

The closure will be effective Tuesday, March 17 at 6 pm and is expected to be in effect for two weeks, after which time the company “will evaluate the situation.”

A limited number of employees and management will remain at the resort to secure and maintain the facility. The company also said it has committed to pay all full-time Wynn and Encore employees during the closure.

That pronouncement followed a Sunday afternoon address from Gov. Steve Sisolak in which he ordered the closure of all K-12 public schools in Nevada beginning Monday to mitigate the impacts of COVID-19, according to the Las Vegas Review Journal.

“Wynn had already made plans to close its poker room and race and sportsbook earlier this week, and began temporarily cancelling all large entertainment gatherings — including buffets, nightclubs and theater presentations — in its Las Vegas and Boston resorts this weekend.”

Wynn chief executive officer Matt Maddox released a video days ago in which he told employees that their jobs are safe as the industry experiences a downturn from the coronavirus pandemic.

“Wynn Macau and its attached Encore Macau were two of the properties in the Chinese territory to temporarily halt operations during a 15-day casino shutdown. Its property in Massachusetts, the Encore Boston Harbor, is set to close to guests by 6 am EST Sunday,” reported reviewjournal.com.

Wynn isn’t alone. MGM Resorts International announced its decision to temporarily suspend operations at its Las Vegas properties until further notice, effective as of Tuesday, March 17th. Casino operations will close on Monday, March 16th, followed by hotel operations.

A statement released by Jim Murren, Chairman and CEO of MGM Resorts said: “As the coronavirus pandemic has intensified in the United States over the past week, the people of MGM Resorts have worked to try to find a way to continue delivering high quality hospitality and entertainment experiences for our guests while keeping our employees doing the jobs they love in a safe environment. Welcoming people from around the world is what we do, and our employees have tremendous pride in their work.

“Despite our commitment to dedicating additional resources for cleaning and promoting good health, while making difficult decisions to close certain aspects of our operations, it is now apparent that this is a public health crisis that requires major collective action if we are to slow its progression,” it continued.
