The Coronavirus is serious business. It’s deadly because of its ease of transmission through geometric progression, from one victim, , to many, through coughing, sneezing and simple body contact. We have never seen so many people greeting one another with fist bumps rather than the old ritual of shaking hands. That’s good news and with the sale of antibacterial soaps, cloths and basic soap, combined with proper hygiene, we pray this epidemic will run itself out, quickly.

However, we are concerned about the lack of preparation this administration has made for this and any other viral outbreaks. Back in 2018 the Trump administration fired the government’s entire pandemic response chain of command, including the White House management infrastructure. set up by the previous president.

Back in 2014, the Obama administration confronted the overseas Ebola outbreak, quickly and efficiently. The president appointed an “epidemic czar” inside the White House, set up a permanent epidemic monitoring and command group inside the National Security Council, in the department of Homeland Security and in the Center for Disease Control.

Sadly, as pointed out above, they are all gone. Not reassuring news for our 320,000,000 vulnerable and frightened citizens. The Center for Disease Control hasn’t a ready supply of corona-virus test kits available to satisfy the growing needs of hospitals and other health care facilities.

President Trump is doing a grievous disservice to the American people by promulgating the erroneous notion that the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta were sufficiently prepared for this fatal virus that is continuing to claim lives as each moment passes. Being thoroughly transparent and totally forthright with the American people is not only required and absolutely necessary during this crisis, but it is incumbent on the nation’s chief executive.

New York City’s deputy mayor for health, Raul Perea-Henze, contacted the CDC stating, “Slow federal action on this matter has impeded our ability to beat back this epidemic.” At present, it takes too much time to analyze the results. Horror stories abound about those who cannot find a doctor or facility to test them because their symptoms are not too severe. This leads to panic and sadly, isolation from friends and relatives who fear contamination from one who could merely have a slight cold.

It has come to the attention of the Jewish Voice that a young man who had recently traveled to Italy with another young man who tragically tested positive for the Coronavirus is unable to have a test for the virus prescribed to him by a doctor. While he is not presenting any of the symptoms normally associated with the Coronavirus, he was in direct contact with this friend who is currently hospitalized for the virus. Let’s bear in mind that this is an airborne virus and for any doctor to refuse to have this man tested represents the height of medical irresponsibility.

Over 4,000 people in NY state are in monitored quarantine and the number of those infected has risen to well above 50. Last Thursday, the number was 22, indicating a growing number of cases are to be expected before this disease is under control. With international travel booming, cruise lines usually, at this time of year, booked to capacity, cities crammed, all make close contact inevitable. That said, it’s difficult and painful to comprehend how our leaders failed to anticipate this type of epidemic and its spread. Let’s hope and pray for the victims throughout the world to recover and for all of the nations of the world to come together, as one, to prepare us to attack the next inevitable outbreak of another such deadly disease.
