Abramorama recently announced the Discovery acquisition of director Roberta Grossman and executive producers Nancy Spielberg, Ronald S. Lauder, and Ori and Mirit Eisen’s award-winning documentary Who Will Write Our History. The Discovery broadcast is scheduled for January 2020 in the U.S. and many territories around the world and comes at a time when facts are branded as “fake news” and journalism is under attack. The feature documentary, shot on location in Poland with the participation of Joan Allen, Adrien Brody, Jowita Budnik, Piotr Glowacki, Karolina Gruska and Wojciech Zielinski, reminds us of the courage of a secret band of journalists, scholars and community leaders who decided to fight back against lies and propaganda with paper and pen.

A New York Times Critics Pick, The Times called it “A bold story of Nazi resistance,” “Immensely important,” and “heartbreaking.” The deal was negotiated on behalf of the filmmakers by Abramorama’s COO/Partner Karol Martesko-Fenster and Strategic Advisor Joe Cantwell, and on behalf of Discovery by Senior Director, Business & Legal Affairs Melanie Jones.

Who Will Write Our History had a special screening in NYC at the 92nd Street Y, hosted by the 92nd Street Y, Ronald S. Lauder, and The Committee to Protect Journalists, followed by a conversation with director Roberta Grossman, Executive Producer Nancy Spielberg and “Who Will Write Our History?” author Samuel D. Kassow, moderated by CNN’s Dana Bash.

On International Holocaust Remembrance Day 2019, Who Will Write Our History had an unprecedented global theatrical release. On that day, Abramorama, with the support of UNESCO, the World Jewish Congress’ #WeRemember initiative and others, organized 355 screenings in 55 countries, as well as a premiere screening and a Facebook Live integrated event at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France, with the participation of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., Emanuel Ringelblum the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw, Poland, the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles, and the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum in Birkenau, Poland.

The film went on to play in more than 75 countries and prestigious film festivals including the Palm Springs Film Festival, Rome Film Festival, and the Berlin Film Festival as a Berlinale Special. Who Will Write Our History has won audience awards at the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival, Miami Jewish Film Festival and JFilm Festival, and best documentary at the Twin Cities Film Festival.

The Lodz Ghetto

In November 1940, days after the Nazis sealed 450,000 Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto, a secret band of journalists, scholars and community leaders decided to fight back. Led by historian Emanuel Ringelblum and known by the code name Oyneg Shabes, this clandestine group vowed to defeat Nazi lies and propaganda not with guns or fists but with pen and paper. Now, for the first time, their story is told in the documentary featuring the voices of three-time Academy Award® nominee Joan Allen and Academy Award® winner Adrian Brody. Who Will Write Our History mixes the writings of the Oyneg Shabes archive with new interviews, rarely seen footage, and stunning dramatizations (shot on location in Lodz and Warsaw, Poland) to transport us inside the Ghetto and the lives of these courageous resistance fighters. They defied their murderous enemy with the ultimate weapon – the truth – and risked everything so that their archive would survive the war, even if they did not.
