Shrimp? Grits? In Crown Heights?
It’s a combination that works, according to Sruli Eidelman, who just debuted his Izzy’s Fried Chicken restaurant at 262 Kingston Avenue.
The cuisine is authentic Southern. And kosher.
“In his latest venture to expand the conventional kosher palette, Sruli Eidelman, the kosher restaurant entrepreneur behind Izzy’s Brooklyn Smokehouse, is set to open his latest Crown Heights eatery this week: Izzy’s Fried Chicken. The menu boasts Fish ‘n’ Grits (a kosher take on the Southern classic Shrimp ‘n’ grits), fried green tomatoes, and biscuits with sausage gravy, in addition to deep-fried chicken,” reported The Jewish Week.
“We’re one of the first kosher spots to offer authentic, Southern comfort food,” Eidelman, 32, told the newspaper. “Since opening Izzy’s Brooklyn Smokehouse in 2015, the eatery snagged citywide recognition for its fare, crowned Brisket King of NYC in 2017 and Rib King of NYC in June by the specialty food event producer Food Karma. (“Everyone was entering pork ribs — we did a beef-back rib and won first place,” said Eidelman.)”
Izzy’s is not a new concept. More than two years ago, it earned the title of Brisket King 2017.
“Izzy and his team served up some wonderful pastrami brisket and regular brisket, both of which had a lot of flavor and an intense rub of pepper, salt, and likely other spices,” reported nycbbq.com. “If you’ve never made it out to Izzy’s, you should. It’s worth the trek to Crown Heights to see how Izzy has been inventive with BBQ even while being limited by keeping kosher. (This also means he’s never been able to eat at most of the BBQ places he has been inspired by, because they aren’t serving kosher meat.)”
It’s menu includes such items as Sliced Brisket, Pastrami, Smoked hot wings, Pit-Smoked Brisket & Beans, and Beef Dinosaur Ribs, with desserts like Lemon Meringue Pie and Blueberry Pie.
People love it. The web site yeahthatskosher.com filed this breathless review: “While I would normally never review a restaurant during a trial period, the food was so good that it was worth calling out. When it comes to the meat, it is on par with some of the best (if not the best) BBQ I’ve ever had. I’ve judged the Long Island Kosher BBQ Championships for 3 years, and the only BBQ I’ve had that is about par to this meat is Ari White’s Wandering Que (fka Hakadosh Barbecue). The brisket & pastrami were delicious and had the right texture. Wings were amazing and a totally different flavor than your typical hot wings. The brisket & beans were good & flavorful. But it was perhaps the Ribs that stole the show. The flavors and the texture were unreal.”
