Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was the most commonly blamed ‘villain’ in Amazon’s decision to scrap plans for a second headquarters in NYC, according to a poll released on Monday March 18th. New York state voters polled by Siena College, were asked who was the “hero,” “villain” or “role player” in the failed Amazon HQ2 move into Long Island City, Queens. “Who do New Yorkers blame? Well, there’s certainly blame enough to go around … However, voters say the biggest villain was Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez,” revealed pollster Steven Greenberg.

As reported by the NY Post, the poll showed Ocasio-Cortez, the 29-year-old Democrat, bore the brunt of the blame. Thirty-eight percent named the newbie congresswoman the biggest villain, while a mere 12 percent called her a hero. By contrast, 34 percent of NYS voters identified local activists as the chief villain. Mayor Bill de Blasio was named villain by 29 percent. In the poll, 28 percent called Gov. Andrew Cuomo the villain. Amazon itself was the villain as per 26 percent of voters. State Senate was guilty according to 21 percent of those polled, and 17 percent named the labor unions as the villain in the debacle.

While the blame was somewhat dispersed, voters were in unison that the Amazon withdrawal was harmful to NY. Sixty-seven percent said it was “bad” for New York, whereas only 21 percent said it was “good,” as per the Siena College Poll.

In response to the statement that, ‘the current politics of state government is making it harder for businesses in New York to be successful’, an overwhelming 67 percent of voters agreed, while only 26 percent disagreed. Markedly, even 53 percent of Democrats agreed with the statement.

A majority of voters, or 61 percent, indicated they supported the broken agreement that would have allowed Amazon to receive $3 billion in government incentives in exchange for creating 25,000 jobs, with 30 percent of voters opposed. “Clearly, jobs outweigh the cost of government incentives in the minds of most voters,” said Greenberg.

The poll, which queried 700 registered voters and has a margin of error of 4.2 percentage points, also looked into other popular issues, including congestion pricing for tolls to enter parts of Manhattan, capping property taxes, drivers licenses for illegal immigrants, and legalizing marijuana. Most notably, it found that 51 percent of voters believe that New York is now shifting too far to the political left, with 36 percent disagreeing. Also, 79 percent of voters support requiring students to be vaccinated in order to attend schools.

Amazon is now pursuing plans for a new corporate headquarters in Crystal City of Arlington, Virginia. Last week the online retailer and tech giant won its last needed approval for the incentives it sought to seal the deal for the new HQ2 location in Northern Virginia.
