If you can’t take the heat, then get out of the kitchen, or in this case, get out of Washington and the political hotseat. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez hasn’t hesitated to dish out insults and clapbacks to a number of her detractors, but when it comes to mainstream media criticism of her new apartment in a luxury high-rise building, she’s singing a different tune.

The nascent Bronx representative didn’t like the fact that news outlets pointed out that she now lives in a decent apartment in a nice building, despite her being a champion of the working class and downtrodden and long-forgotten workers. The New York Post reports that she took particular issues with media for reporting this story around the same time that a planned terror attack that had her name on a hit list was squashed.
“Journalists are sharing stories about where I live the same day it’s shared that myself + others were targeted by a mass shooter,” she tweeted. “All this paired w/ amplifying unvetted conspiracy theories. It’s reckless, irresponsible & puts people directly in danger. This isn’t a game.”
The New York Post notes that many news organizations reported on how Ocasio-Cortez now makes a congressional salary that’s well over $100,000 above the country’s median income and that she can afford to live in a building that has rents that start at $2,000 just for a studio apartment. Using the information provided in the articles, a person could figure out about where the congresswoman lives and what places in the neighborhood she would frequent, but no outlets published any personal information that would be very revealing or compromising for Ocasio-Cortez.
The stories focused mostly on the hypocritical nature of the congresswoman’s new living quarters because she routinely rails against the rich and speaks in support of a more equal and just society. While the building in which Ocasio-Cortez lives does provide some housing for those who aren’t nearly as fortunate as a Washington politician, this is not a benefit off of which Ocasio-Cortez is living.
The thwarted terrorist attack to which the congresswoman referred was going to be committed by Coast Guard Lt. Christopher Hasson, according to documents filed in court. Hasson was also arrested last week. His list was a who’s who in Democratic politics and mainstream media.
