As political uncertainty and turmoil rage on within Venezuela, there was at least relief at the thought of aid making its way across the border to some of the citizens in dire need of assistance.

The aid never made it across the border though as the situation turned fiery and violent because Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who isn’t recognized as president anymore by a number of countries like America, suspected a coup attempt against him, CNN reports. Maduro and Colombia do not have a good relationship anymore.

When Maduro announced his rationale for dissociating from Colombia, he also spoke about “the strength of the Venezuelan armed forces” could pose a threat to America if the country is not careful.

The aid was coming yesterday no matter what because of a deadline that was set by Juan Guaido, who heads the forces going against Maduro within Venezuela. His position is that “we will not stop until we see freedom in Venezuela.” Even though much-needed aid was on the way, Maduro made sure the situation quickly turned chaotic as aid trucks were set ablaze. A total of five people died by the end of yesterday, though there could be more casualties, and invaluable aid supplies went up in smoke, according to CNN.

While most of the supply vehicles were blockaded, a couple of trucks from Brazil were able to drop off aid in Venezuela, according to the office of communications for the Brazilian presidency. As for the trucks that were set on fire and the rest that never made it to the border, United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo didn’t take too kindly to Maduro’s display. On Twitter, the secretary of state wrote “what kind of a sick tyrant stops food from getting to hungry people? The images of burning trucks filled with aid are sickening.”

President Donald Trump has sided with the opposition forces and sees them as legitimate. He’s been speaking more about the embattled country and its people recently, including at a rally he held in the past week. After the rally, he tweeted his support for the people of Venezuela. “I ask every member of the Maduro regime: End this nightmare of poverty, hunger and death. LET YOUR PEOPLE GO. Set your country free! Now is the time for all Venezuelan Patriots to act together, as one united people. Nothing could be better for the future of Venezuela!”

In return for his support, the opposition leader, Guaido, thanked the president and hoped that the future could be a brighter one, Fox KC reports. “Now there is a debate between the democracy and dictatorship — one between life and death,” Guaido said in Spanish. “Today this fight is existential.”
