Bloomberg Might Self-Fund Possible 2020 Presidential Bid

Ex-New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg says he will reach into his own deep pockets if he decides to take what many characterize as a foolhardy run at the presidency in 2020.

Bloomberg is clearly under a shamed of being rich. Another would be presidential candidate, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, recently told reporters that the amount of money in politics was threatening to turn the Democratic presidential nomination into “one more plaything that billionaires can buy.”

“I ran three times, Bloomberg said at an event in Austin, Texas. “I used only my own money so I didn’t have to ask anybody what they wanted in return for a contribution. And, if I ran again, I would do the same thing. I think not having to adjust what you say and what you work on based on who financed your campaign is one of the things that the public really likes. “I understand not everybody can be self-funded but those that can, I think, should.”

Bloomberg said he won’t make a decision on a possible presidential bid for “another month or so.” He was in Texas doing what he does so well, handing out money, this time from his foundation in order to combat climate change.

The question of money funding presidential campaigns, of course, has moved to center stage in the wake of Donald Trump having spent $100 Million of his own funds and his winning effort in 2016.

Few people credit Bloomberg as a serious contender, if for no other reason than that he served as a Republican mayor in New York, but now says he may well run as a Democrat.

Vos Iz Neias recently noted that Warren “has already formed a presidential exploratory committee and generated excitement with a visit to Iowa last week. She asked recently: “Is this going to be a Democratic primary that truly is a grassroots movement that is funded by the grassroots and it’s done with grassroots volunteers, or is this going to be something that’s one more plaything that billionaires can buy?”

Interestingly, all the talk of billionaires running for president comes just days after billionaire Tom Steyer Announced that he will not throw his hat in the ring as had previously been reported. Instead, the veteran hedge fund manager said he will spend his time trying to impeach president trump, an effort that has been derided as a fool’s errand by many.

Steyer reportedly spent in the neighborhood of $120 million to try and influence the 2018 midterm elections.
