In a shocking tweet on Sunday afternoon, President Trump said that the US would “devastate Turkey economically” if they launch attacks on the Kurds in the region, as the US begins to remove equipment and troops from Syria.
The Kurds are Syria’s sworn enemies and the NATO-allied country has previously threatened to wipe them out. The Kurds also fought alongside US troops in their joint mission to destroy the ISIS caliphate in Iraq they make up the majority of US allied fighters operating in Syria in the civil war against President Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
“Starting the long overdue pullout from Syria while hitting the little remaining ISIS territorial caliphate hard, and from many directions. Will attack again from existing nearby base if it reforms,” the President tweeted on Sunday.
He added, “Will devastate Turkey economically if they hit Kurds,” but followed up in a second tweet, “Likewise, do not want the Kurds to provoke Turkey.”
The Trump issued threat is the first made against the NATO ally and comes as a surprise to many as Turkey had also joined in the fight against ISIS. Turkey, however, has threatened the lives of the Kurdish forces in the region in light of the US troop pullout of Syria.
Moreover, Turkey, under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has also terrorized journalists through mass incarcerations and has seen more terrorist activity on its soil than in previous years. Erdogan also has a deep and abiding animus towards Israel as he heralds the call of radical Islam.
CNN reported on Thursday that the first US military ground equipment has been withdrawn from Syria, according to an administration official with direct knowledge of the operation.
Last week, Erdoğan abruptly cancelled a meeting on Turkish soil with national security adviser John Bolton for saying the US withdrawal was contingent upon Turkey’s pledge not to attack US-backed Kurdish fighters in Syria once troops leave, according to the CNN report.
“Bolton made a serious mistake. If he thinks that way, he is in a big mistake. We will not compromise,” Erdoğan said.
“Russia, Iran and Syria have been the biggest beneficiaries of the long term U.S. policy of destroying ISIS in Syria – natural enemies. We also benefit but it is now time to bring our troops back home. Stop the ENDLESS WARS!” Trump continued in the second tweet.
