Promising to “impeach the @#$%#@”, newly elected Democratic Congresswoman from Michigan Rashida Tlaib delivered a scathing speech bashing President Trump following her swearing in ceremony.
Tlaib’s profanity-laced tirade came during an event held by the MoveOn progressive organization. Recalling a conversation she had with her son, who told her that “Look mama you won- bullies don’t win,” Tlaib said that she replied “You’re right, they don’t. And we’re gonna go in and impeach the [expletive]”.
Tlaib, who won Michigan’s 13th Congressional District, is joined by Representative Ilhan Omar from Minnesota in becoming one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress. Tlaib is Palestinian, while Omar is Somalian
Omar has sparked controversy for saying after being elected that she supported the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement targeting Israel, after saying during her campaign that it was “counteractive” and prevents dialogue.
Omar’s comment came in response to a website called Muslim Girl, which pressed her on her appearance during the campaign at a Minneapolis area synagogue, in which she had said that BDS “stops the dialogue” and is “counteractive” to achieving a two-state outcome.
“Ilhan believes in and supports the BDS movement, and has fought to make sure people’s right to support it isn’t criminalized,” her campaign told Muslim Girl after the election. “She does, however, have reservations on the effectiveness of the movement in accomplishing a lasting solution.”
Omar has in the past called Israel an “apartheid regime”. In 2012, she said that Israel had “hypnotized the world” to ignore its “evil doings.”
In a highly controversial move, Tlaib displayed a global map on her first day in the House of Representatives with a note posted over Israel that reads “Palestine.”
Buzzfeed reporter Hannah Allam posted on Twitter, “Someone has already made a slight alteration to the map that hangs in Rashida Tlaib’s new congressional office.”
Even before she was sworn in on Thursday—the ceremony of which was attended by Women’s March leader and anti-Israel activist Linda Sarsour, who has been criticized for not condemning her ties with anti-Semitic Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan—Tlaib endorsed the BDS movement.
She also announced her own upcoming congressional delegation trip to the “West Bank” details of which have not been publicized.
