Uber has a way for more commuters to save money on a ride. As of Thursday October 25th, Uber is offering 10 to 20 percent in discounts to Uber Pool riders in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island. As reported by the NY Post, the offer is dependent on the riders’ willingness to walk a few blocks to a nearby pickup point.

The ride-hailing giant already successfully offers Pools in Manhattan, as of 2014, using a route-mapping algorithm to direct passengers to a pickup point that can sometimes be more than a block away. As of January 2017, Uber said that approximately 72 percent of riders in East Brooklyn neighborhoods, including Brownsville, Canarsie, and East New York, use Uber POOL for trips over other Uber riding options. Almost half of all riders in the outer boroughs with the option, have been choosing Uber POOL rather than other Uber options. The ‘affordable transportation option’ is now being expanded to include more areas.

The discount, now offered to outer borough users, will be by choice, and the door to door service option will not be eliminated. “Uber won’t leave riders in the outer boroughs stranded, despite Mayor de Blasio’s attempt to limit Uber,” a company spokesperson said, referring to the one-year cap on permits for ride-sharing cars, which the mayor signed into law in August. Also, Uber drivers will earn the same amount of money regardless of which option riders select, the spokesperson said.

The announcement comes in the wake of Uber’s continuous efforts to boost service in the Big Apple, despite the city’s efforts to crack down on the transportation network company, headquartered in San Francisco, CA. Last month, Uber also introduced a fleet of city-mapping cars, with roof-mounted 360-degree cameras, to map streets and intersections in NYC and nearby suburbs.
