Up in northern Ohio, a new film was screened to quite a positive audience reception. While such a scene isn’t too unlikely, the content of the film makes the situation pretty unusual. according to The New York Times.

The New York Times reports that for $15, attendees were able to see Dinesh D’Souza’s “Death of a Nation” documentary that holds a central thesis that the current president is saving the country from new Nazis that make up the Democratic party, and it was a smash hit with those who saw it that night in Ohio.

“This is the real history of the Democratic Party,” David Wadsworth said. He was one of the people who saw the movie and spoke to the New York Times and makes his living as the clerk of courts in Medina County, where the film was screened. “People don’t give us the credit, as Republicans, for not being the racist ones.”

The Medina County Republican Women put on the event that was attended by over two dozen people who feel that they are constantly being persecuted and that the other side is actually filled with racism and anti-American sentiment.

As the New York Times put it, the people who saw the film “said it spoke to their deep-seated fears about the fate of the country if Democrats prevail in the November midterms, and did so using the raw, flame-throwing rhetoric that, to them, signals a Trump-like authority and authenticity.”

The movie to these people served as more than an emotional experience but a possible rallying point as they saw it further driving home the implications of the upcoming election. “This showed the true side of the conservative movement: We’re not the hatemongers,” Lisa Navin said, a 63-year-old attendee of the film’s screening who added that the Democrats are the “real racists.”

“This wasn’t about bashing Democrats, this was about pointing out the truth,” Alliss Strogin, a zoning inspector in Medina said to the New York Times, who added that “Strogin said that Democrats were ‘not as ambitious as Adolf Hitler,’ but that ‘some of their philosophies were basically of the same track.’”

She made a later clarification when she said “they’re along the same track in that they both want the government making decisions for the people, rather than the people making their own decisions.”

The Jewish Voice previously reported on D’Souza being pardoned by the president after D’Souza was convicted of making illegal campaign contributions — a felony — back in 2014.

D’Souza is most well known for his political documentaries, Hillary’s America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party, and 2016 Obama’s America. Both films were widely distributed political movies which were released during the 2012 and 2016 election seasons.

“Dinesh D’Souza attempted to illegally contribute over $10,000 to a Senate campaign, willfully undermining the integrity of the campaign finance process,” said then-Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara. “Like many others before him, of all political stripes, he has had to answer for this crime – here with a felony conviction.”

In May 2014, D’Souza pleaded guilty to one felony count of making illegal contributions in the names of others. In September 2014, the court sentenced D’Souza to five years probation, eight months in a halfway house (referred to as a “community confinement center”) and a $30,000 fine.
