JC Penney Grand Opening at Kings Plaza Draws Thousands; Free Giveaways Galore

On Friday morning August 10th, lines of thousands of gleeful shoppers lined up on Flatbush Avenue near Avenue U for the highly anticipated grand opening of the second JC Penney store in Brooklyn.

Entertainers, dance groups and other Brooklyn personalities entertained the throngs of people who came to share in this historic moment in Kings Plaza history.

Once inside the multi-level, state of the art JC Penney location, shoppers were treated to tremendous discounts on all items and were issued coupons to be redeemed for free merchandise. Moreover, the iconic Sephora makeup brand distributed free bags of merchandise as JC Penney employees happily greeted shoppers while giving out free items such as purses, cell phone chargers, etc.

Any dyed in the wool New York City sports fan will surely remember legendary New York Knicks player, Walt “Clyde” Frazier, and JC Penney did not disappoint fans. On hand to sign autographs for JC Penney shoppers and pose with the team jersey, the former NBA star dazzled the crowd with his ebullience and charm.

“Wow! All I can say is wow! “ declared LeTanya James of Bushwisk who travelled by MTA bus to Kings Plaza just to see her favorite NBA star in person. “I grew up watching Clyde Frazier on TV as my family were huge Knicks fans. The price of tickets to Madison Square Garden to watch the Knicks play were more than we could afford, so I never had the chance of seeing him up close. This is like a dream come true. I say thank you so very much to JC Penney and especially Kings Plaza for making this happen. I am absolutely sure that other Brooklynites are just as thrilled to have the chance to talk with Clyde, “ she said.

Others such as Melinda Loconsolo from Bay Ridge came to seek bargains and check out the selection of items offered at JC Penney. “I stood on line outside Kings Plaza today and I am extremely glad that I did. My friends said I was crazy for doing it, but I came home with such high quality items at amazing bargains. To me, it’s like Christmas in the middle of summer. As a matter of fact, many things that I bought today, I am saving as Christmas gifts for my family and friends.”

16-year-old Darryl Henderson of Canarsie joined a group of friends for the JC Penney grand opening. “I think this will be a great opportunity for folks from Brooklyn to have a store like this in the area. Not everybody shops online and believe it or not, shopping can be an “experience” like it used to be in our parents’ generation. Coming down to Kings Plaza with friends and meeting others makes it a great day, “ he said.

In a press release sent out to the media, JC Penney said that their decision to open a second location in Brooklyn was predicated on the growth of the New York City market. The Kings Plaza store will feature the latest JCPenney brands and concepts in a sleek and modern store environment, delivering more style and value for all hard-working Brooklynites.

“JCPenney opened its first Brooklyn store in 2014 at Gateway Center to great fanfare, and the location has consistently been one of our top performers since it opened,” said Joe McFarland, executive vice president and chief customer officer of JCPenney. “The introduction of our second Brooklyn store at Kings Plaza underscores our commitment to growth in high-potential markets, reinforces our belief in the power of brick-and-mortar retail and speaks volumes about the vitality of this dynamic and bustling borough.”

Customers are encouraged to touch, try and sample products with specially trained beauty consultants on-hand to offer their expertise and recommendations on today’s hottest beauty products and trends.

Energy Efficient by Design

The Kings Plaza store furthers the Company’s efforts in energy conservation by being certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as “Designed to Earn the ENERGY STAR.” The store will incorporate features such as:

  • Energy-saving, long-lasting LED lighting throughout the store, as well as LED exterior signage.
  • Occupancy sensors to automatically dim lighting in stockrooms, offices and restrooms for increased energy savings.
  • A high-efficiency HVAC system within the store.
  • Advanced controls that adjust lighting and temperatures to coincide with sales tasks, minimizing energy use.
  • Water-saving plumbing fixtures that exceed code by more than 30 percent, including on-demand faucets and high-efficiency water closets.

JCPenney has operated stores in New York since 1922, opening its first Brooklyn store location in 2014 at Gateway Center. The opening of the new JCPenney store is part of a major redevelopment of Kings Plaza, the borough’s largest shopping center. Aimed at making Kings Plaza the preferred place to shop, stroll and dine for Brooklyn’s trendy shoppers, the transformation of the 1.1 million sq. ft. mall features an elevated shopping experience with new high-profile retailers and restaurants, along with significant building enhancements, including a redesigned mall entrance and addition of a new civic park. Hours of operation for the JCPenney store located at Kings Plaza are 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Monday through Friday; 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday; and, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday.
