New sanctions are coming against Russia, according to the State Department. The sanctions come in response to Russia using a powerful nerve agent to attack a former spy and United Kingdom citizen overseas. Sergei Skripal, and his daughter, Yulia, were the victims of the toxic attack, according to The New York Post. The two were fortunate enough to eventually recover after being found unconscious on a bench a few months ago.
“The United States determined under the Chemical and Biological Weapons Control and Warfare Elimination Act of 1991 that the government of the Russian Federation has used chemical or biological weapons in violation of international law, or has used lethal chemical or biological weapons against its own nationals,” department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a statement.
Russia can expect to be hit with the sanctions around Aug. 22. The sanctions could further complicate any efforts between the two countries to improve relationships.
