Steve Saperstein, Republican, Conservative, Independence, and Reform party candidate for the 46th Assembly District, is denouncing Democrat Ethan Lustig-Elgrably for accepting the endorsement of the Muslim Democratic Club of New York due to its President, Tahanie Aboushi’s, well-documented statements regarding Israel.
The club recently came out in support for self-described “Democratic Socialist” gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon. President Aboushi, a civil rights attorney, has tweeted a number of times regarding anti-Israel sentiment. Aboushi has called Israel “invaders”, “land-grabbers”, criticized the IDF as destroyers, likened the Jewish state to extortionists, and called media reports of Gaza “Zionist propaganda” in past tweets.
The club has close ties to Linda Sarsour. Sarsour has called for a “jihad” on President Trump, and called Israelis “White Supremacists.”
Staunch supporter of Israel, Steve Saperstein, said “I call on Ethan to immediately decline the endorsement and denounce these anti-Israel views as they’re our strongest ally in the Middle East. He either harbors these same anti-Israel sentiments or has failed to do the basic due diligence to research these deeply troubling statements of the organization’s President before aligning himself and his campaign with her by accepting the endorsement. Either one of these possibilities are shocking to me and should be to the rest of our district.”
Saperstein continued, “I’m not surprised. I saw the viral video of him speaking in front of the Bay Ridge Democrats and he didn’t have any research done to see how many funds were stolen by Pam Harris under his watch. I’m deeply disturbed that my opponent would stoop so low to accept the endorsement of this organization who’s President has strong anti-Israel views. Israel is our strongest ally in the Middle East and the only democracy in the region.
Saperstein also stressed his support for diversity and the Muslim community.
“Let me be clear, I have a specific problem with this particular individual who is the President of this organization.”
I would be willing to sit down with him to share the very public anti-Israel comments she has made numerous times in the past. I would hope afterward that he would denounce these views and make the honorable decision to turn down this endorsement. It’s clear that there is a pattern regarding lack of research performed by Lustig-Elgabray when making decisions
