Cohen’s Secret Trump Tapes Could Mean He’s About to Flip

Washington and its observers have wondered about whether or not Michael Cohen would flip on President Donald Trump after the president’s former fixer had his offices raided by the feds.

There is no evidence that Cohen is cooperating or struck any kind of deal, and it’s not clear that prosecutors in the southern district of New York, which is handling Cohen’s case, even want one, The Guardian reports.

The revelation that Cohen has secret recordings he made, some of which are of the president, has caused worry in Trump’s inner circle, according to former insiders. The president’s usual allies are trying to help by treating Cohen as a traitor to the Trump cause, according to The Guardian.

The White House is anticipating that Cohen will cooperate with the government.

Fox News, the president’s de facto state-run news channel, used its lineup to try damaging Cohen’s character by bringing up charges like that he’s an unscrupulous lawyer and can’t be trusted, even though the president said he only hires the best people.

Matt Drudge’s Drudge Report used its home page to largely and loudly label Cohen “the Rat”.

Michael Caputo, a former senior adviser on the Trump campaign, wasn’t sure about any potential plea deals between Cohen and the government, especially because no charges have even been filed against Cohen. “I can’t speculate. But one thing is for certain is this doesn’t look good, and people in the Trump ranks are talking about it.

“Because Michael was always considered to be the ultimate loyalist, and this really throws a monkey wrench in that whole theory.”

A second former Trump campaign adviser, Sam Nunberg, said that Cohen’s decision to hire the Washington power lawyer Lanny Davis signaled his desire to accept any kind of deal.

“Any political person would know: the minute he signed Lanny Davis, it was over,” Nunberg said. “He wants to make a deal or do what he feels is going to be best for him. He’s no longer willing to take a bullet for Donald Trump.”

The question of whether Cohen remains loyal to Trump isn’t necessarily the same as the question of whether Cohen is approaching a deal with prosecutors. Cohen’s personal loyalties still matter in this situation, and on Wednesday, Davis said those loyalties changed.

“Cohen is trying to reset his life as not being Donald Trump’s bullet-taker, or worse, a punching bag for Donald Trump’s defense strategy where he takes the bullets,” Davis told NBC News. “This is a turn for him. It’s a new resolve to tell the truth no matter what, even if it endangers him.”

Cohen could face charges of bank fraud, wire fraud and campaign finance violations in connection with a company he set up before the 2016 election to facilitate a payment to the pornographic film actor Stormy Daniels, according to The Guardian. Davis released an audio recording on Tuesday night in which Trump appears to suggest to Cohen that a payment to suppress the former Playboy model Karen McDougal’s story be made in cash. Both women said they had affairs with the president, both happening around the time of the birth of Trump’s son, Barron.
