Charles Krauthammer Announces He has Weeks to Live

Charles Krauthammer, Fox News contributor and Washington Post columnist, has announced to his readers that he has only weeks to live.

Krauthammer wrote in an op-ed for The Washington Post on Friday that an abdominal tumor, which he had undergone surgery to remove in August 2017, has returned. He also read the letter out loud live on Fox News that day.

“I wish to thank my doctors and caregivers, whose efforts have been magnificent,” he said and wrote. “My dear friends, who have given me a lifetime of memories and whose support has sustained me through these difficult months. And all of my partners at The Washington Post, Fox News, and Crown Publishing. Lastly, I thank my colleagues, my readers, and my viewers, who have made my career possible and given consequence to my life’s work. I believe that the pursuit of truth and right ideas through honest debate and rigorous argument is a noble undertaking. I am grateful to have played a small role in the conversations that have helped guide this extraordinary nation’s destiny.”

Krauthammer, born to an Orthodox Jewish family in New York City in 1950, majored in economics and political science at McGill University in Montreal. After a year of study at Oxford, he attended medical school at Harvard, where he paralyzed himself in a diving board accident. He was a resident of psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital until 1978, when he moved to Washington, D.C. He began writing politically in 1980, both in the magazine The New Republic as a speechwriter for Vice President Walter Mondale. He has written for magazines and newspapers such as TIME and The Washington Post, the latter of which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1985. He has also served as a political analyst for Fox News for the past decade.

Other Fox News contributors have responded to Krauthammer’s letter with words of support. “It is such quintessential Charles Krauthammer. It is so graceful, it is so honest, it is so brave,” said Chris Wallace, host of Fox News show Outnumbered. “He led his life fully, vibrantly. He led a life of passion and of great consequence … We were honored and graced to have him at Fox News.”

“I leave this life with no regrets,” concluded Krauthammer in his letter. “It was a wonderful life — full and complete with the great loves and great endeavors that make it worth living. I am sad to leave, but I leave with the knowledge that I lived the life that I intended.”
