The Museum of Pop Culture is looking to expand, adding a second location in New
York City.  As per Mopop’s announcement on its website, the Seattle-based nonprofit museum has purchased midtown’s B. Altman & Co. building as a potential site.  The 100,000-square-foot space in Madison Avenue, is owned by the NY Public Library, as part of the city’s Science, Industry and Business Library. The library already had plans to consolidate this branch. The museum’s founder, Paul G. Allen, who is the well-known co-founder of Microsoft, has been working with New York’s artistic, civic and government communities and architects to create a museum that reflects on NY as a popular cultural capital. Permit applicants and building plans are already in progress, with the museum slated to open in four years’ time.  While the figures have not yet been released, the current proposal for the development of the museum is estimated to be in the nine-figure range, as per the WSJ.

The museum will be the first in the City to celebrate creativity in all forms of popular culture, including music, film, theater, fashion, gaming, and comic books tailored to NY. “We are committed to creating something profoundly new, immersive and exciting, consistent with the diverse and creative dynamism of New York. We are working now with a breadth of local stakeholders to learn how MoPOP NYC might serve as a sustainable engine of creative expression, a celebration of popular culture, and an educational resource to all five boroughs”, said Chris McGowan, Vice President of Mopop, in the organization’s press release.

According to museum representatives, a move into New York is the “natural evolution of the brand.”  The Museum of Pop Culture, which opened in Seattle close to twenty years ago, greets nearly 700,000 visitors annually.  Currently, the museum building  in Seattle consists of 140,000-square-feet  of space on 3 floors with exhibits and interactive activity stations ranging on popular cultural hits including, Marvel comics, rock and roll music, horror films, sci-fi, and video games.
