“They will replace existing meter systems and rear passenger displays,” the news service reports. “DASH is a lightweight tablet acting as a digital meter. It includes multi-language support, GPS navigation and an emergency panic button.”

RYDE is a 10-inch tablet that supports a number of third-party apps for in-ride entertainment. The program officially kicked off on Thursday. The Taxi and Limousine Commission says these additions are major improvements to the struggling industry.

Metro notes that New Yorkers will “soon be able to see a flat, upfront fare when you hail a cab with the taxi app Curb as part of a series of upgrades the company is rolling out to make cabs more modern.”

Dash replaces taxi meters with a tablet that has tools like multi-language support, GPS navigation, live traffic information. It also, Metro notes, incorporates a heatmap, allowing drivers to see where the highest demand for a trip is — street hails or e-hails — based on historical trip data analyzed by Curb.

According to Curb, DASH is a digital meter that replaces bulky legacy taxi systems with a single lightweight tablet providing drivers with a user-friendly interface and feature-rich tools like multi-language support, GPS navigation, live traffic information, and an emergency panic button. DASH will also help increase drivers’ earning potential with such features as fare heatmaps to help drivers find more rides and flat, upfront ride pricing to attract more riders during times of low demand.

“RYDE is a new passenger-facing 10-inch tablet that pairs with the DASH system and gives riders an interactive experience to make commutes more enjoyable,” the company said in a release. “Also running on the Android platform, RYDE will support a variety of third-party apps, including an upcoming successor to the current Taxi TV media platform. The RYDE system unlocks new possibilities for brands and advertisers while introducing passengers to a new generation of in-cab entertainment.”

“Yellow cabs are part of the fabric that makes this city so vibrant and distinctive. In the face of disruption, there is a unique opportunity to modernize and enhance the taxi experience for both sides,” said Amos Tamam, CEO of Curb. “By empowering drivers with tools that make their job easier and more profitable, they’ll be able to focus on providing the utmost service to their riders.”

Curb is already piloting its new in-cab technology with dozens of taxis throughout the city and will begin a mass rollout next month. Tamam adds,

“This new initiative marks a turning point for taxi owners and operators. We still have a lot to accomplish but we’re excited to bring this impactful technology to the people who need it most.”

Curb likes to claim that it is “changing the way people get around. Curb connects people to fast, convenient and safe rides from professional taxi and other for-hire drivers in cities nationwide. By bringing technology to the taxi experience, Curb is offering riders choice, reliability and convenience whenever they ride.”

Curb became a part of Verifone in 2015 and merged with the Way2ride app, allowing Curb to connect passengers to even more cabs and drivers across the US.
