Sheldon Silver Found Guilty 2nd Time in Corruption Case 

A jury convicted former New York Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver of public corruption charges Friday, dashing the 74-year-old Democrat’s second attempt to avoid years in prison after a decades-long career as one of the most powerful politicians in state government.

The ex-speaker of the New York state Assembly Sheldon Silver was found guilty on Friday of selling his office for $4 million in kickbacks — affirming a 2015 conviction on the same charges that had been overturned on appeal, the NY Post Reported.

Prosecutors said Silver broke the law by collecting nearly $4 million in fees from a cancer researcher and real estate developers who in turn benefited from his clout in state government. He made another $1 million investing that money.

Silver could again be facing a long prison term when he is sentenced on June 13.

Brooklyn Shomrim Chief Charged With Rape of Minor

Jacob Daskal, the founder of the private Orthodox Security patrol Shomrim  was arrested  for allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl. He has been charged with rape in the third degree, among other charges, The Foward reported.

According to police, Daskal faces allegations that he had sexual intercourse with a 16-year-old between August and November of 2017.

These allegations have rocked the Boro Park community in Brooklyn. Daskal is the central figure in the Shomrim, also known as the Brooklyn South Safety Patrol and is an extremely influential community figure for the Hasidic community.

 

Likud Party Gains Popularity in New Poll, Netanyahu Has Public’s Confidence 

A new poll conducted by Channel 2 (Israel National News)  on Wednesday projected 35 seats in the Knesset for the Likud Party if elections were held now, an increase of seven seats from a similar survey conducted several weeks ago.

The dramatic increase suggests a boost in the public’s confidence in Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the head of Likud, in light of recent events, JNS News Reported.

According to the poll, if Netanyahu established a coalition along the lines of his current coalition, it would be 66 seats strong

The poll also examined public opinion on America’s withdrawal from the nuclear deal with Iran. It found that 62 percent of Israelis believe that scrapping the agreement would be good for Israel.

When asked whether they feared a war because of the recent escalation with Iran on the Syrian border, 62 percent said they did.

Iranian cleric threatens to destroy Tel Aviv and Haifa

A senior Iranian cleric threatened on Friday to destroy Tel Aviv and Haifa if Israel acts “foolishly”.

“We will expand our missile capabilities despite western pressure (to curb it) …. to let Israel know that if it acts foolishly, Tel Aviv and Haifa will be totally destroyed,” hardline cleric Ahmad Khatami said during Friday prayers at Tehran University, according to A7 News.

Khatami has in the past urged Palestinian Arabs to “rage” against Israel after Trump declared Jerusalem as the capital of the Jewish state.
