As palpable animus for the sovereign Jewish state of Israel continues to flourish in the unholy alliance between the radical political left and their Muslim supporters, it appears that the movement dedicated to fostering the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) receives it perpetual stamina through celebrity endorsements.

For a number of years now, (and for some inexplicable reason) Roger Waters, the front man for the iconic rock group “Pink Floyd” has led the international charge in vociferously condemning Israel as both an “oppressor” and “occupier” and has made it his raison d’etre to rally entertainers of all stripes in boycotting Israeli performances as well as lobbying businesses, academics and others to do the same.

Until this juncture, Waters and his circumspect agenda have never been publicly scrutinized, but thanks to one intrepid documentarian, the proverbial lens has now shifted to the motives that drive the influential performer.

Enter Ian Halperin, a Canadian filmmaker whose other works focus on such larger than life celebrities as Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Kurt Cobain. In his recent film “Wish You Weren’t Here” Halperin shines a brash and truthful spotlight on the purported distinctions between assuming an anti-Israel posture and being a blatant anti-Semite.

Judging from the impressive litany of interviewees he assembled for the film including World Jewish Congress President Ronald Lauder, renowned Harvard law school professor and civil libertarian Alan Dershowitz, Jewish Agency head Natan Sharansky, various Hollywood insiders, assorted rock idols and even PLO terrorist Leila Khaled to represent the “other side”, one can safely assume that Halperin not only did his homework but has prodigiously produced an explosive film that will virtually blow the lid off of the seething fount of Jew hatred that is at the very core of Roger Waters’ existence.

The viewer of this film will see Waters railing against Israel and positing himself as a proponent of Palestinian rights and even as an apologist for terrorism as he submits personal testimony before a UN committee. If that were not egregious enough, we also recoil in horror as we witness the propaganda-like visual images and anti-Semitic tropes that he proudly passes on to his unwitting fans at his concerts.

When former British Prime Minister Tony Blair is queried about Waters’ agenda by Halperin at a symposium in Rome on the subject of anti-Semitism, Blair readily admits that Waters’ messages are replete with anti-Semitic vitriol.

The tentacles of the pernicious BDS movement that Waters has championed have insidiously made an indelible imprint on college and university campuses around the globe. Fascism, say the people in Halperin’s film, comes in all forms and in this time and in this place it is has manifested its ugly head in the form of vindictive boycotts, led by such malevolent personalities as Waters.

There is no question that this film deserves to be aired in mammoth venues in every major city, town and hamlet in the world. Its message is not only vital but strikes at the heart of our existential survival as a society grounded in morals and civility. “Wish You Weren’t Here” is now available on Vimeo on Demand.
