1947-2018: Kudos to Guatemala for Supporting Israel

Isn’t it somewhat strange that the “vital, democratic, peace loving” nations of the world such as Germany, France, England, Sweden…… all turned their backs on Israel when President Trump led the United States to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capitol and move its embassy to that immortal city? Stranger yet is that Guatemala, a tiny nation, 8 thousand miles removed from Israel, with less than 900 resident Jews, proudly and immediately copied our actions.

On Christmas Eve, 2017, these words were earnestly and proudly uttered by Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales to his people: “Dear people of Guatemala, today I spoke with the prime minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu. We are talking about the excellent relations that we have had as nations since Guatemala supported the creation of the state of Israel as early as 1948. One of the most important topics was the return of our embassy to Jerusalem. So, I inform you that I have instructed the chancellor to initiate the respective coordination so that it may be. God bless you.” Throw in the fact that the actual proposal to recognize the state of Israel in the UN was presented and lobbied for by Guatemala’s ambassador to the UN, Jorge Garcia Granados back in 1947. Why this support for Israel?

When then President Jimmy Carter ended aid to Guatemala during its internal armed conflict with Fidel Castro’s communist guerrillas who were hoping to topple that democratic country, Israel provided weapons, aircraft and training that helped Guatemala defeat the bloodthirsty communists. Israel is also warmly remembered for granting scholarships to thousands of Guatemalans and provides technical and medical support for that country’s projects and people. Israeli fingerprints are all over the country.

At the base of Volcano de Pacaya, there sits an Israeli constructed and maintained power plant and just 26 kilometers from Guatemala City there’s the Amatitlan Geothermal Power Plant, again, an Israeli project that produces electricity out of volcanic steam, to many small, local villages. Israel has brought modernity and improved living conditions to that nation and they appreciate it with their reciprocal support in the form of diplomatic recognition. How unusual for a nation to take from Israel and give back….anything.

Today, President Morales has much in common with President Trump. Both political novices won on anti-establishment platforms and they face fierce opposition that includes efforts to sabotage them and remove them from office. The Obama-imposed anti-American collectivists in Guatemala who oppose Trump and his policies, fear Morales’ embassy move to Jerusalem will attract President Trump’s attention. Trump could realize that Morales values individual liberty and economic growth as Trump himself does and the Communists don’t. The possibility then exists that Trump may respond and reverse the Obama administration’s anti-Guatemala policies as he has already done in other areas. That scares Cuba, Venezuela and their Socialist allies in South and Central America. To the little struggling country tucked away in Central America, we say thanks for your support!
