The IDF has denied that it carried out a strike in the northern Gaza Strip after Palestinian sources said two people were killed when a missile hit a motorcycle in Beit Lahiya shortly before 2 pm on Tuesday afternoon.

Military sources told Tazpit Press Service (TPS) that the two Palestinians had apparently been killed in a ‘work accident’ after explosives they were carrying went off.

“Two martyrs arrived at the Indonesia Hospital in the northern Gaza Strip, as a result of the targeting of a motorcycle in Beit Lahiya. Their identity is being investigated,” said Ashraf al-Qadra, a spokesman for the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

Palestinian media reports named the two dead men as Hussein Ghazi Nasrallah and Mustapha Sultan. The reports said the two were members of the Islamic Jihad Al-Quds Brigades.

The IDF carried out an attack in the Beit Lahiya area late Monday night after two rockets were fired at the Ashkelon region. Iron Dome missile defense batteries downed at least one missile. No injuries or property damage were reported.

The exchange was the latest in a string of exchanges between the IDF and terror elements in Gaza. Twice in recent weeks IDF units have discovered and demolished a cross-border tunnel, in one instance killing several members of the Islamic Jihad group.

More recently, terror groups fired rockets last weekend at the Israeli border town of Sderot, with one landing near a private home and another damaging a local kindergarten. Iron Dome units also shot down a third rocket. IDF forces responded to those attacks by hitting Hamas positions, killing two and prompting the groups’ military wing to warn that Israel would “pay the price” for the attack.

Former Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniya called last week for Palestinians to respond to President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel with a third intifada.
