The Brooklyn Botanic Garden Chile Pepper Festival

Fall Festivals, Leaf Peeping, Classes for Kids and Adults, and More

Delight in fall foliage, autumn festivals, classes for children and adults, and more at Brooklyn Botanic Garden (BBG) this season. Through September, colorful flowers in the Annual Border, Shakespeare Garden, and Fragrance Garden, giant hibiscuses in the Shelby White and Leon Levy Water Garden, and native wildflowers in the Native Flora Garden and other areas continue to display their blooms. As the weather cools in October and November, brilliant fall foliage returns to BBG. New Yorkers don’t need to travel far to witness the dramatic show of colorful leaves throughout the Garden.

Chile Pepper Festival celebrates its 25th anniversary on Sunday, October 1, with a day of scorching global bands, fiery food tastings of hundreds of unique chile-flavored foods, spice market and cookbook pop-up shops, and more, all against the beautiful backdrop of Brooklyn Botanic Garden in early autumn. And on Saturday, October 28, Ghouls & Gourds, BBG’s zany Halloween festival, returns with live music, stilt walkers, harvest-inspired workshops, and a colorful costume parade for all.

The Garden offers ongoing tours, Continuing Education workshops, and special after-hours events for new and seasoned gardeners, food and cocktail connoisseurs, and everyone interested in health and wellness from plant-based sources. This October, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, along with Rockwell Group and Patina Restaurant Group, will host architectural events in the Garden’s historic buildings as part of Archtober and Open House New York. Children and their families can also drop in for free programs in the Discovery Garden all season long.

Further information on these and other fall programs at BBG can be found below or by contacting [email protected]. For high-resolution images, please visit bbg.org/press.

For 25 years, New Yorkers have celebrated the change in seasons in spicy fashion at BBG’s Chile Pepper Festival, where visitors can enjoy outdoor performances by world music acts from around the globe alongside a marketplace to sample and buy an array of delicacies featuring chile peppers. This year’s festival welcomes five world-class musical acts—Battle of Santiago, Lost Bayou Ramblers. Ladama, Red Baraat, and Mariachi Tapatio de Alvaro Paulino. MCs Robbins & Ringold light up the stage with fire breathing, sword swallowing, and other fiery feats. In the marketplace on Cherry Esplanade, visitors can sample and buy one-of-a-kind products, including hot sauces, spicy chocolates, and unusual-yet-delicious chile combinations in ice cream, jams, and pickles from independent food purveyors.

Brooklyn’s Sahadi Market, a Middle Eastern food store founded in 1895 and winner of the 2017 James Beard Foundation America’s Classics award, returns with Sahadi’s Souk, a pop-up market offering spices for sale and talk on cooking. Community Bookstore’s pop-up shop features a selection of spicy food cookbooks and signings with local authors Maricel E. Presilla and Chitra Agrawal. During Chile Chat, Brooklyn gardener Gregory Seaton talks about cultivating and cooking with peppers. Children can check out Hot Chiles for Cool Kids, where kids pot up a pepper plant to take home. Take your photo with murals by local street artists inspired by chile peppers from around the world. During the festival, Yellow Magnolia Café will feature specials honoring the chile in all its spicy glory, including three-bean grass-fed beef chili, jumbo hot dogs with chili, and addictive habanero-honey chicken wings with cool buttermilk ranch dip.

Musical performances by the Persuasions, Jeffrey Broussard and the Creole Cowboys, Brooklyn United Marching Band, Rana Santacruz, Jenny Hill and Liquid Horn, DJ Ecotone, and Street Mule get visitors grooving. Festival goers can delight in the magical sights of Mortal Beasts & Deities’ troupe of stilt dancers, Mettawee River Theatre Company’s Victorian creatures, Phydeaux’s Flying Flea Circus of Fate, and KENYC’s dashing display of kendama—a Japanese cup-and-ball toy. Kids of all ages can get in the spirit with insects and critters both real and imaginary—meet an entomologist and her amazing bugs at Dr. Rutledge’s Insectorium and Petting Zoo, check out composting demonstrations with adorably icky worms, make new friends while crafting a giant spider web, and, just for toddlers, cuddle up with farm friends in the Pretend Petting Zoo.
