British actor Robert Pattinson first came to prominence with his role in the teen vampire series Twilight. Since then, the actor has moved on to heavier dramatic roles, the most recent being his performance in “Good Time,” a crime drama directed by Joshua and Ben Safdie. According to a NY Post report this month, Pattinson was fascinated by the brothers work after seeing a still from their 2014 drama “Heaven Knows What.” Pattinson was reportedly so taken with the photo that he emailed the Safdies in 2015, urging them to include him in their next project.

“I fell in love with the photograph,” Pattinson explained in an interview this month with Jimmy Kimmel. “We took a meeting and I was just overwhelmed with these guys.”

According to Josh Safdie, Pattinson told the directors that “whatever you are doing next, I want to be a part of — even if it’s catering.”

Initially, the brothers rebuffed Pattinson’s eager request, telling him bluntly that they felt he was unsuited for their next project. When that project, Uncut Gems, stalled, the directors relented, building Good Time around Pattinson, who portrays a character attempting to get his brother out of jail after a bank heist gone wrong.

“Rob [Pattinson] had a desire to get deep with a project and he looked to us and felt some type of connection to us,” Josh Safdie said in an interview with Business Insider this month. “Immediately it changed our budget, it changed everything.” Casting a well-known name like Pattinson proved to be a boon for the directors, whose previous work, including “Heaven Knows What” and 2013’s “Lenny Cooke,” had not garnered as much mainstream attention. “Good Time,” which premiered at Cannes, has earned critical acclaim for the Safdie’s writing and direction, and Pattinson’s performance in the lead role. Ben Safdie also stars in the film as Pattinson’s mentally handicapped brother.

“Working with Rob sent a message to the industry saying we are willing to play the game,” Josh Safdie told Business Insider. “We are willing to work with the people that you guys have anointed as stars, and we’ll work with them. And not only will we work with them, we’ll do it in a way that will be so satisfying to them, that other actors will want to do it. We’re seeing that, but Rob set the bar high.”

“Good Time,” released on August 11, is now playing in select theaters throughout the country.
