More than 600 people attended the event; fundraising from the community exceeded $600.000

More than 600 members from the Deal community came to support the Israel Cancer Research Fund (ICRF) at the 10th Annual “Evening of Inspiration,” on Sunday, July 23. The event was hosted at the residence of Michelle and Jack Haddad, in memory of Frieda and Nathan Franco and Edward M. Dweck. Ariela Ben-Dayan, Harry Adjmi, Samantha Harary, Charles Ben-Dayan and Lisa Oved served as the evening’s chairpersons.

Master of ceremomies Harry Adjmi spoke about the passion of the Deal community and its devotion to ICRF for the past ten years. He thanked the Haddads for their hospitality and for supporting the mission of ICRF. More than $600,000 was raised from members of the community during the evening.

Rob Densen, president of ICRF, introduced Professor Yarden, recipient of the 2017 Israel Prize, the country’s most esteemed honor. He said; “ I cannot , in great detail, really explain his research. But what I do know is Prof. Yarden has chosen to use his gifts to help heal the world. He and hundreds of scientists like him in Israel must be supported. It is a blessing to be able to do so.”

An ICRF-funded scientist since 1988, Prof. Yarden was presented the Israel Prize this year in celebration of his significant and original contribution to the understanding of cancer. He has paved the way for new treatment protocols that have entered into clinical practice and have saved lives. Focusing on the activity of hormone-like molecules called growth factors, Professor Yarden’s discoveries have led to the development of several anti-cancer drugs.

Following Prof. Yareden’s keynote speech, inspirational speaker David (DJ) Cohen galvanized the crowd when he shared his personal battle with cancer. He reported that his cancer treatment includes drugs that were developed based on the research of ICRF scientists.

A dazzling runway fashion show of Indian American couture designer, Naeem Khan, capped the evening of inspiration. The younger members of the community modeled Khan’s intricate and ornate evening wear collection.

The Israel Cancer Research Fund (ICRF) was founded in 1975 by a group of American and Canadian physicians, scientists and lay leaders who sought to ensure adequate funding for high potential cancer research investigations while helping to prevent the loss of Israel’s most promising cancer researchers to overseas institutions due to a lack of funding in Israel for Ph.D.s, post-doctoral fellows and accomplished young scientists.

Since its founding, the organization has awarded more than 2,300 grants to Israeli cancer researchers via fellowships, project grants, career development awards and professorships. With the grants for 2016/17, ICRF’s funding has reached almost $60 million.

“Through expanded funding,” said Ken Gabel, ICRF New York Director of Development, “ we can continue to support the vital research that is needed to treat and ultimately cure cancer, while playing a critical role in helping to keep Israel’s finest scientific talent in Israel. The generous support of the Deal community every year helps ICRF-funded scientists to find more cures and treatments for cancer, for the benefit of all human kind.”
